Upcoming Events/Fundraisers/Dates
Softball Tournament July 23-25.  Volunteers needed, especially at the gate.  Contact Tom Plechaty for more information.
The Opening Act
In the absence of Club President, Adam Bain, Craig Knobloch jumped in and handled the governance portion of the meeting.  Jonathan Turner was present to handle the entertainment duties, along with his featured group, the Kiwanis John Deere Classic Bye Bye Birdies.
Tom Plechaty put out his plea for help for certain selected portions of the softball weekend.  If you have some time available or if you expect to be temporarily thrown out of your house, come on out to Campbell's Sports Complex and drown your sorrows in beer.
Gene Smith announced that by coincidence, there was a total of 2010 birdies at the Classic this year which should run the total amount the Club will receive to an amount in excess of $2,500.
Craig reminded us that on July 25, if any of you are softballed out, you are welcome to meet with him and other Club participants at the Botanical Center from 12:00 to 3:00 for our first annual Learn to Ride activity.
John Califf reminded us that next Monday would be the grant application deadline for the year.
Bob VanDeVoorde made a plea on behalf of the House Committee for a replacement now that Brian Verdun is leaving the Club. Hours are from 11:00 to 1:30 every day of the meeting.  If you think you might be interested, contact Bob VanDeVoorde or Dale Grabau.
We were delighted to welcome as guests an Interclub group from Geneseo.
In Fun and Fellowship, the Kartel won the preliminary prize, which they graciously accepted.  They also won the opportunity to win the grand prize, but Bob Wakefield found himself coming up short in the face of the wiley Mike Bell.
As a special presentation, the Club presented its $500 grant to the St. Joseph Worker House.

The Feature Attraction
The program was given by Donna Young of Isabel Bloom.  Donna began her presentation by giving a brief background on the development of this long-standing community treasure.  Presently, the company employs approximately 80 - 100 workers.  There are stores in Davenport and West Des Moines.  At this time, all manufacturing is conducted in the United States and is a totally local product.  Donna explained that her role is coming up with ideas for new pieces.  Old pieces are retired as new ones come out.  Special pieces have been designed for Race for the Cure and Festival of Trees, among other local events.  The company also makes grants for school children, and a number of these grants have been made on the average of approximately $2,000 per grant.  Donna and three other designers come out with approximately 25 new ideas every year.  A product of increasing interest is the personalization of pieces, such as can be done with a baby rattle or other similar objects.  Donna explained that Isabel Bloom is proud to work in partnership with a number of Quad Cities area charities.
