  Upcoming Events/Fundraisers/Dates

We still have 15 or so Dining Tour Books available for sale.  These make a great holiday gift for friends, colleagues, or family.  Remember, if we sell all 100 books this, we make an extra profit of $400 for the club.  The books are $35 and can be billed on your Kiwanis quarterly billing.  If you cannot attend a meeting, just let me know (daryl@gaselectriccu.com or call 788-6796), and we will arrange to deliver the books to you.  The books truly do pay for themselves and are an easy way to support the club!
The Opening Act

January 11, we held our annual joint meeting with Rotary.  We served as hosts for this event.  Our President, Adam Bain, presided and Jonathan Turner did his always excellent job of entertaining our group, along with his Rock Island Service Club Warblers.

Announcements were brief in order to give our program presenter adequate time.  Adam reminded us that our joint social with Rotary will be held January 27 at Circa.  Contact Daryl Empen if you are interested.

John Califf again reminded us that grant requests would be due in to his committee by January 18.

Adam also reminded us not to be shocked next Monday if we find many of our familiar parking spots taken during our meeting.  There will be a show at the Expo Center but arrangements have been made to provide adequate parking for our membership.

Guests included several Key Club members, guests of a number of our members, and longtime friend of the Club and Moline Kiwanis leader, Mel Peterson.

In Fun and Fellowship, the Kartel won the preliminary prize and managed to recover $6 of the $7 the group had bet on this event.  However, the Kartel also won the opportunity to go for the grand prize, which Duncan Reid managed to win.

The Feature Attraction

The program was given by Dennis Pauley, Mayor of the City of Rock Island.  In his presentation, Mayor Pauley addressed City finances, infrastructure, crime, education, economic development, projects, and a number of other topics.  He began by extending his appreciation to longtime Club member and former Mayor, Mark Schwiebert, for his years of service on council and as Mayor.  Mayor Pauley also extended his thanks to the hard work of his Rock Island City Council and the City Manager.  Mayor Pauley addressed finances and stated that the City would be facing a $1.4 million budget shortfall in the City's general budget.  In the past, City leadership has worked hard to avoid layoffs and discontinuance of major City services while long-term improvement plans include funds pledged for street maintenance, water service, and wastewater improvements.  Mayor Pauley lauded the number of new businesses which have either opened or relocated and expanded in Rock Island and specifically cited the investment being pledged toward the Rock Island Fitness and Activity Center, as well as the Martin Luther King Center.  The Mayor also referred to his Safer Community Task Force which will address the safety and security of citizens.  He also cited the Building Excellence Program of the School District which is significantly upgrading the educational facilities of the District.
