  Upcoming Events/Fundraisers/Dates

We still have 15 or so Dining Tour Books available for sale.  These make a great holiday gift for friends, colleagues, or family.  Remember, if we sell all 100 books this, we make an extra profit of $400 for the club.  The books are $35 and can be billed on your Kiwanis quarterly billing.  If you cannot attend a meeting, just let me know (daryl@gaselectriccu.com or call 788-6796), and we will arrange to deliver the books to you.  The books truly do pay for themselves and are an easy way to support the club!
The Opening Act

The first meeting of 2010 was called to order by our presiding officer, Adam Bain.  Jonathan Turner again provided the entertainment, along with his Kiwanis Royal Canadians.

Adam began his announcements by reminding us that the annual joint meeting with Rotary for the State of the City Address will be held next week, Monday, January 11.  We will be serving as hosts to our Rotarian friends.

We were also informed that on January 18, the Expo Center will be hosting the Annual Farm Show.  Adam passed on assurances he received that there would be parking for our membership, but be prepared to temporarily store a few hogs in the back seats of your cars.

The song leader and invocation sheets were passed around again.  Please give some thought to helping out our Club meetings in this manner.

Adam also announced that the service sheet was being passed around.  You might want to keep track of the participation you lend to our various Kiwanis and Kiwanis-sponsored projects since International would like to be apprised of our efforts.

Daryl Empen reminded us that our Circa Night with Rotary will be held Wednesday, January 27 at 7:00 p.m.  This has always been an enjoyable event, so please pick up a Dining Tour book, enjoy the restaurant discounts, and get in to Circa for about the cost of a book.

John Califf announced that the grant committee would be meeting and that the deadline for receipt of grant applications would be January 18.

Dave Umphrey announced that the next Terrific Kids appearance would be at Frances Willard grade school at 8:30 a.m. this Friday, January 8.  This is a great way to recognize Rock Island children who are recognized by their teachers as having done something special.

Joe Robb informed us that a January Interclub is being planned.

Guests included Dave Umphrey's children.  Considering the fact that he and his children all sat at the notorious back table, the rest of us at the table were very impressed by how well behaved they were, somewhat unlike their father.

In Fun and Fellowship, Jud Briggs won the preliminary prize which he chose to throw back into the pot.  Gary Johnson won the right to go after the first grand prize of the year but still managed to lose to our intrepid Secretary, Mike Bell, who demonstrated that he is as adept at reeling in Fun and Fellowship dollars as he is at repossessing automobiles.

We were all delighted to see longtime member and Club leader, Bob VanDeVoorde, back with us.

The Feature Attraction

The program was given by Ava Ketter, Director of the Rock Island Public Library.  Ava supplemented her presentation with a  very interesting and well-produced slide show.  She explained that modern libraries now go far beyond just being depositories for books.  Modern libraries, like Rock Island's, reach out to all ages and provide a full range of media availability.  A Rock Island library card will not only access Illinois Quad City libraries but all libraries in an area in northern Illinois north of Rock Island and excluding only the metro Chicago area.  Services can be brought directly to the individual through the Internet.

Future Attractions

Monday, January 11.  Joint Meeting With Rotary.  Mayor Dennis Pauley, State of the City Address.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
