  Upcoming Events/Fundraisers/Dates

MLK Center Christmas Party, Wednesday, December 16th.  Please arrive by 4:00 to help.  This is an over 30 year tradition for the club!  Contact Alicia Shuman at alicia@netexpress.net with questions or to let her know you plan on attending.

We still have 25 Dining Tour Books available for sale.  These make a great holiday gift for friends, colleagues, or family.  Remember, if we sell all 100 books this, we make an extra profit of $400 for the club.  The books are $35 and can be billed on your Kiwanis quarterly billing.  If you cannot attend a meeting, just let me know (daryl@gaselectriccu.com or call 788-6796), and we will arrange to deliver the books to you.  The books truly do pay for themselves and are an easy way to support the club!
The Opening Act

Our President, Dasher Adam Bain, called the meeting to order.  Blitzer Jonathan Turner provided entertainment, along with the Monotone Kiwanis Chorale.

Adam first reminded us of the Tom and Jerry party being held by the Davenport Club this Thursday, December 17.  This is a great opportunity to get an Interclub credit, mingle with your fellow Kiwanians, and to remember that trick of touching your nose with your eyes shut.

Tom Plechaty gave us the first reminder of his cheese distribution.  If you don't want it coming back to you in the Bad Gift Exchange, make sure you pick it up real soon.  Tom also mentioned that the Club cleared almost twice as much as it did last year in this project.  Many thanks to Tom and all those who participated.

Yes, Virginia, there still are some Dining Tour books available.  Keep this in mind for a stocking stuffer.

Adam informed us that the Club Social with Rock Island Rotary will be January 27.  This is another incentive to pick up one of the Dining Tour books.

Dave Umphrey reported on Salvation Army bell ringing this past Saturday and informed us that this project came off extremely well.

Remember that the annual Club Bad Gift Exchange is next Monday.  No promises were made as to whether Santa's favorite elf, Rod Jennings, would be officiating or who his helper might be, but a good time can be assured.

In case this gets to you before then, the Club's annual sponsorship of the Martin Luther King holiday party will occur Wednesday, December 16.  Kiwanis helpers would be welcome starting at 4:00 p.m., since doors will be open at 5:00.

A special feature of the meeting Monday was a slide montage of pictures taken over recent years of Club meetings and activities in celebration of the Club's 90th anniversary.  If you think about it, this is an extraordinary occurrence, considering that the Club began as veterans were returning from World War I and continued on through the Great Depression, World War II, intercontinental flight, the Cold War, and more New York Yankees baseball championships than most people (other than Dale Grabau) would care to think of.

In Fun and Fellowship, the preliminary prize was won by the Kartel.  Kristi Crafton won the opportunity to win the grand prize but chose to accept the lottery ticket Mike Bell had been carrying with him for the last few weeks.  Not surprisingly, it was a losing ticket.

We welcomed a new member, Julie Derrer, to our membership and thanked Gene Smith for sponsoring her.

The Feature Attraction

The program chair for the month, Marla Andich, introduced our speaker, Glenda Nicke.  Glenda is the Associate Dean of Adult and Continuing Education, among other functions, at Black Hawk College.  She provided some statistics on the adult education program, one being that while they take no participants under 16 years old, virtually all participants are 17 years of age and older.  The target groups for this program are those who do not have a high school diploma or GED or are not able to read or write in English.  As one might imagine, funding is a significant issue for this program.  Glenda complimented the leadership of Black Hawk College for finding ways of making funds available for these vital programs.  Last year, almost 2,000 individuals participated in this program.  She then related some success stories which have occurred in the past and which should surely continue in the future, so long as the program is allowed to thrive.

Future Attractions

Dec. 21            Annual Bad Gift Exchange
Dec. 28            No meeting

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
