The Opening Act
|
President Adam conducted
the November 30 meeting. Jonathan Turner
once again handled the entertainment along with his electronic music group,
Rock Island Kiwanis Steamroller.
Adam once again left
all of his committee chairs off the hook and handled the announcements. His first announcement was that Friday,
December 4 at 8:45, the Club would be extending its Terrific Kids program to
Thomas Jefferson grade school in Milan.
The annual Bad
Gift Exchange will be held December 21.
Now's the chance to rummage around your house for those hidden
treasures.
There will be no
meeting December 28 or any time during that week.
The latest report
on Bob VanDeVoorde is that he is supposed to be undergoing tests this week at
Mayo.
The annual
Davenport Club Tom and Jerry Experience will be held December 17. For those of you who are looking forward to
an excuse to kick back that afternoon, give Joe Robb a call.
The membership was
informed that our monthly food pantry collection will now be going to the
Community Care Center program which the Club has begun supporting.
Guests included
Key Club members from Rock Island High School.
Once again, there
was a number of Happy/Sad Dollars, including those given by Liz Loveless in
recognition of her 22nd anniversary date for Club membership.
In Fun and
Fellowship, Dave Umphrey won the preliminary prize, which he graciously donated
back to the Club. In a fine display of
how no good deed can go unpunished, he also won the opportunity to win the
grand prize, which he did not win.
Adam handled the presentation of a number
of grants to various organizations. Rock
Island Parks and Recreation received $100 to be used for its Halloween
fest. Churches United received $1,000 in
support of its Winnie's Place program.
Salvation Army also received $1,000 for its Mittens for Kids
program. St. John Lutheran Church of
Rock Island received $500 for its After School Enrichment program.

The Feature Attraction
|
The
program was given by Larry Herman of Midwest Food Bank. Larry presented his program around a slide
show which showed the growth of the organization and the extent of its
service. MFB touches approximately
3,000,000 people a year in its program of gathering and collecting food
products from around the country, warehousing them in the MFB warehouses, and
making the products available to organizations.
The program started in Bloomington in 2003 and now serves approximately
600 organizations a month through its warehouses in Peoria, Bloomington, and
Indianapolis. Food is made available to
organizations which must agree to make its distributions for free. The organization relies heavily on volunteers
for working in the warehouses and driving the trucks which pick up the food products. Roughly 99 percent of contributions received
go directly to program services.
