Coats for Kids, Old Navy, Southpark Mall. Thursday, November 5th. Meet at the store at noon to assist.
|
The Opening Act
|
First, an announcement to the membership regarding Bob Vandevoorde. Monday morning
Bob's Doctor advised him that his condition was not heart related, which
is what we originally thought. Hours later Bob ended up back in the ER.
The ER Doctors couldn't give Bob a definitive diagnosis, so his plan is
to head north to Mayo's with hopes of getting an answer. On top of
all this, Bob suffered additional heartache. Bob's daughter-in-law died
yesterday, unexpectedly, at age 48. This is undoubtedly a very difficult
time for Bob, so please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
And now back to the newsletter. Baron
of Bisquick and Bishop of Bags, Adam Bain, presided over our October 26
meeting. Jonathan Turner was unable to
attend, so we entertained ourselves with our customary monotone efforts.
Adam
presented a number of announcements.
First, our annual Coats for Kids will occur November 5. Participants should plan on meeting at noon
at the Old Navy store in SouthPark Mall.
Marla Andich provided sign-up sheets for each table.
Next
week, November 2 will be the last day for our special Hunger Drive. Consider bringing a non-perishable food item
to the meeting.
We
still have some Dining Tour books left and, at last check, most all of the
restaurants are still in business. If
you haven't already done so, pick one up.
The contribution goes to a good cause and you can recoup your investment
in virtually no time flat.
Adam
also gave out a call for more gently-used books for our weekly presentations.
Dale
Grabau informed us that Bob VanDeVoorde is incurring some health problems. Please keep Bob in your best thoughts.
In
Fun and Fellowship, Dale Grabau won the preliminary prize, which he graciously
donated back to the Club for the benefit of the New York Yankees Widows and
Orphans Relief Fund. Dave Bender won the
opportunity to go for the grand prize and won both challenges, despite Mike
Bell's best efforts.
Adam
also made a presentation to representatives of Alternatives for the Older Adult
in the amount of $1,200 for this organization's very fine Grandparents Raising
Grandchildren program.

The Feature Attraction
|
The
program was given by Alan Carman from the City of Rock Island. Alan covered a number of areas in his
presentation. First, he addressed the
matter of the census and the importance of participating in the census drive
when the short 10-point questionnaire comes to our door. The responses will be used for public
funding, representation, and City planning.
The second area of focus was on City projects. These include the new park where the Armory
used to stand, the Jumer's complex off of I-280, and the flood protection
project to take the place of the protection previously afforded by the
Armory. Alan also took note of the
Centennial Bridge Visitors Center, the Black Hawk Bureau in the VanDerGinst
building downtown, the conversion of the McKesson lofts to condominium
ownership, the Quad City Botanical Center, the Sylvan Slough natural area, and
the Columbia Park planned development.
