The Opening Act

Editor Daryl apologizes for the late delivery of the weekly newsletter from the October 19th meeting!
President Adam Bain called meeting to order. Jonathan was not present so Daryl Empen led us
in harmonious song.
Adam gave a quick overview of the fundraisers coming up along
with the event's chairperson(s). These include
Pancake Day (Bob S.), Rose Day (Denise O.), Peanut Day (Mike & Tom), K5K
(Jeff B. & Craig K.), and Bags Tourney (Adam & Tom). If anyone is interested in helping out with
any of these events please contact the committee chairs.
On October 16 the Kiwanis Clock was dedicated to our beloved
Kermit Schroder. The club thanks Mike
Bell for all of his efforts in coordinating this project.
Our High School's Hunger
Drive is wrapping up, so make sure to bring in
your canned goods and/or money to the next two Monday meetings.
Dining Tour Books are on sale. Our goal is to sell at least
100 books so we can receive $12/book instead of only $10.
The Martin Luther King Reading Program needs more volunteers
to give a ½ hour on Mondays. Contact Alicia for more information.
David Umphrey informed us that Terrific Kids is starting at
Frances Willard and Thomas
Jefferson Elementary
schools.
We will be alternating every other Friday between each school.
Adam asked if anyone has "gently used" children's books lying
around their home please consider donating them to the club to replenish our supply. These books will then be donated to the MLK Reading Program in each weeks programs
name.
Interclub is being held October 19 at Annawan.

The Feature Attraction
|
The program was given by John Califf, program chair &
speaker. John went to France
with his son in June 2009 to visit the American Cemetery
where his uncle, John W. Califf who perished in WWII, is laid to rest. The trip
has led John to explore the topic much further. According to records, Epinal American
Cemetery & Memorial
was dedicated in 1956 and has 5,200 graves making it the third largest American
cemetery in all of France.
Over 4,000 graves are listed as MIA ranging from years 1941-1945. John has shown
a number of additional slides from Paris
as well.
A DVD was
shown, "Fields of Honor", to present the American Battlefield Monuments
Commission. The landscaping and art is what makes up the uniqueness of these
particular cemeteries. Europe, North Africa, Philippines, and Central
America all have beautiful American cemeteries full of art,
sculptures, and amazing landscaping designs. These cemeteries are visited by
thousands annually.
