  Upcoming Events/Fundraisers/Dates
Softball Tournament, August 7-9, Alan Campbell Field.

Web-Site Committee.  We will be revamping the web-site over the coming year, and we are looking for volunteers who would be willing to assist with keeping the site up to date.  Each member will be responsible for a specific area (newsletter, roster, photos of events, officers and committees, etc.  If you be willing to assist with this, please reply to this email or let me (Daryl Empen) know at the next meeting.  You do not need to be a web-site designer or expert.

The Opening Act
Empress Daphne was in attendance to preside over the meeting.  Jonathan Turner was apparently in recovery after a big weekend of Bix musical merriment.  Fortunately, Jim Horstmann was assigned songleader duties which he very ably filled.
As part of Jim's songleading assignment, he also took the opportunity to inform the membership that on July 28, our fearless leader will be celebrating her 50th birthday.  After some quick thought, the membership elected against singing "Hail to the Chief" and settled for a special a capella Happy Birthday offering.
We were reminded of the upcoming softball tournament.  Rumor has it that there are still openings for working the gate.
Adam Bain handled Happy and Sad Dollars, some of which were in recognition of his recent Iron Man performance witnessed and verified by Steve and Cyndi Pressly up in Door County.  There was also a batch of bucks in recognition of performances in the Bix, the Cubs, and that other team that plays half its games in St. Louis.
In Fun and Fellowship, the Kartel won the preliminary prize and qualified for the grand prize as well.  Gary Miner outfoxed the wiley Mike Bell and added to the Kartel's coffers.
The Feature Attraction
The program was given by Justice Thomas L. Kilbride of the Illinois Supreme Court.  As a theme, Justice Kilbride made note of precept No. 4 of Kiwanis, that of fostering and developing better citizenship.  He remarked that, unfortunately, one subject on which Americans seem to be weak is in the area of citizenship.  He observed that many of the foci of education currently are on the meeting of national standards, with an emphasis on subjects such as math and the sciences.  At the same time, the focus on civics and government has lessened.  He cited as an example the relatively recent poll result that more Americans can give the names of the Three Stooges than the three branches of American government.  Justice Kilbride suggested that perhaps civics could become more of a core value in education.
