  Upcoming Events/Fundraisers/Dates
Web-Site Committee.  We will be revamping the web-site over the coming year, and we are looking for volunteers who would be willing to assist with keeping the site up to date.  Each member will be responsible for a specific area (newsletter, roster, photos of events, officers and committees, etc.  If you be willing to assist with this, please reply to this email or let me (Daryl Empen) know at the next meeting.  You do not need to be a web-site designer or expert.
The Opening Act
Empress Daphne presided over the meeting of July 20.  Entertainment was once again provided by Jonathan Turner and his Kiwanis Bix Chamber Choir and Jazz All Stars.
Tom Plechaty informed us that signups are improving for the softball tournament but that he still has some openings at the front gate, as well as service at the liquid refreshment tent during Mark Amacher's shifts.
Daphne also informed us that there are two golf outing opportunities for us this summer.  One is in Aledo on August 5.  The other is in Kewanee on September 14.  If you'd like to participate or actually know who you might find yourself golfing with, feel free to contact her.
Tom Hanson announced that the last Interclub of the Club year will be held August 24 at 6:00 p.m. with the East Moline/Silvis Club.
The Botanical Center is sponsoring an opportunity to participate in a scrambled letter project.  Help out a worthy cause and put a smile on the faces of your fellow Kiwanians.
It did your editor's heart good to find that at least one person actually reads this newsletter.  In confusing wording in the newsletter of a few meetings ago, your editor stated, "As a special treat, Lee Schenck didn't lead us in singing . . ."  Lee pointed this out, and your editor regrets what, for some, like Bob Wakefield, was an unintentional joke.  To the contrary, your editor's intent was to identify the special treat as Jonathan Turner's medley of patriotic songs.  Lee led us in singing Monday, and I would venture to say that the membership was delighted.
In Happy/Sad Dollars, members in attendance had the rare opportunity of seeing the perfect segue when Daryl Empen informed us of how he developed a back problem over the weekend right before Rob Scranton spoke about his trip to India.  Cards were exchanged and, hopefully, Daryl will be back in business shortly.
In Fun and Fellowship, Joe Beatty won the preliminary prize, which he graciously donated back to the Club.  Dick Timmer qualified to win the grand prize but managed to succumb to the wiles of Mike Bell.
The Feature Attraction
The program was given by Paul Rumler, Executive Director of the QC Passenger Rail Coalition.  Paul began by giving some background on this organization.  It was created in May of 2007 and, in a relatively short period of time, has developed a strong base of support, not only from individuals, but from area businesses.  The focus would be on restoring rail service between the Quad Cities and Chicago with an extension westerly to Iowa City.  The funding has been identified not only from federal sources but Illinois and Iowa State sources as well.  The route would be over rights-of-way currently operated by Iowa-Illinois Interstate and Burlington, Northern & Santa Fe and would be operated separately from the current Galesburg-to-Chicago route.  The recommendation for location of a local train station has focused on the Moline Center Station for a variety of factors.  The eastern terminus would be the Union Station in Chicago.  It would take roughly two years from start to finish on establishing this route, and a fare of approximately $45 for round-trip service from the Quad Cities to Chicago should be expected.
