  Upcoming Events/Fundraisers/Dates
State Softball Tournament, August 7-9, 2009.  Volunteers will be needed to run the Gate and at the Beer Stand.  We especially need volunteers for the gate.  Please reply to this email if you can take a 2-hour shift and we will contact you regarding when you can work.

Web-Site Committee.  We will be revamping the web-site over the coming year, and we are looking for volunteers who would be willing to assist with keeping the site up to date.  Each member will be responsible for a specific area (newsletter, roster, photos of events, officers and committees, etc.  If you be willing to assist with this, please reply to this email or let me (Daryl Empen) know at the next meeting.  You do not need to be a web-site designer or expert.
The Opening Act
Empress Daphne graced us with her presence and ably conducted the July 13 meeting.  Jonathan Turner once again provided the entertainment, along with his Kiwanis All Star Singers.  Daryl Empen served as song leader and selected the only song in the Kiwanis registry with the words "hoochee koochee" in it.
Tom Hanson reminded us of the next Interclub to be held July 15 in Kewanee at 12:15.  Tom needs participants and, as we all know, he can play rough.  So if you are looking for a good time early in the afternoon Wednesday, give him a call.
Daphne informed us that the division golf outing will be held in Aledo on August 5, so there's still time to buff the rust off of your clubs and enjoy some good Kiwanis fellowship.
Tom Plechaty gave us an update on the softball tournament and, to no one's surprise, informed us that so far, the sign-ups to work the beer tent compared to the sign-ups to work the front gate are running about 150 to 1.  Tom has promised to provide refreshments to those working the gate, so please help out.  Empress Daphne would hate to have to spend 10-hour shifts to cover us.
To our delight, we were informed that long-time Kiwanian and Moline Club member, Mel Peterson, has thrown his hat in the ring for District Governor.  If you are plugged in to Kiwanis politics, let's show our support to Mel.
For those who haven't been around for a while, Gene Smith gave a shot at trying to solicit Birdies for Charity pledges, but it didn't appear there were any takers.  Gene will be getting back to us with how our Club ended up doing on this fine project.
In Fun and Fellowship, the Kartel swallowed up the preliminary prize of $3.  Our secretary, who ordinarily tosses out nickels like they were manhole covers, also managed to allow the grand prize of another whopping $3 to elude the Club treasury.  Dave Temple won this grand prize and was seen furiously checking out investment opportunities.
The Feature Attraction
The program was given by Club member, Margo McInnis, who spoke to the group in her capacity as director of sales for the QC Convention and Visitors Bureau.  Margo left some handout sheets explaining the "hosted here" program of the Bureau and detailing the benefits derived from the Bureau in conjunction with QC events.
Your Editor cut short his presence during the program in the interest of checking on the progress up on 18th Avenue where the concrete was being poured and the anchor set for installation of our clock.  Work appeared to be progressing well with what appeared to be the appropriate number of cheerleaders on the sidelines.  Those providing the able "assistance" appeared to have been Joe Robb, Dale Blocklinger, John Kustes, Mike Bell and Steve Schroder.  Always good to have your insurance salesman around when people are dealing with sharp tools and heavy objects.
Future Attractions

July 20             Paul Rumler, QC Passenger Rail Coalition
July 27             Justice Thomas Kilbride, Supreme Court of Illinois,
                        Third District
