  Upcoming Events/Fundraisers/Dates
State Softball Tournament, August 7-9, 2009.  Volunteers will be needed to run the Gate and at the Beer Stand.
The Opening Act
In the absence of our Supreme Commander, Denise Ormsby, Adam Bain adroitly stepped in and ran the meeting.  Jonathan Turner again provided the entertainment, this time, with the John Deere Classic No Bogey All Stars.
Tom Hanson informed us that the next Interclub meeting will be Wednesday, July 15 in Kewanee.  Let Tom know if you're interested because if you don't contact him, he will be putting to use all those interesting techniques he's been learning from Gene Smith on getting responses from people.
Speaking of Gene, our own Lord of the Birds made his final chirp this year for Birdies for Charity.
Adam Bain gave us an update on the status of the bags tournament.  His committee is working feverishly on this project and has contacted and obtained support from a number of sponsors.  The committee will be meeting soon to have a dry run through construction of the very intricate detailing necessary in constructing whatever you call the big wooden things you throw the bags at.
Adam also announced that next Monday, July 13, there will be a pivotal event involving our Kiwanis clock.  All those interested can meet up at the site where the clock will be installed at approximately 11:45 or so.  At that time, there will be a ceremonial pad pouring, courtesy of Valley Construction Company.  Valley has very generously agreed to assist and participate in this project.  If you go to the pad pouring, you will miss the meeting, so make up your mind what you want to dress for before you leave your home or place of business at 11:30 or so.
Softball sign-up sheets for our August 7, 8 and 9 event are still being circulated.  Helpers are very welcome.
Adam didn't have the birthday list but relied on the generosity and honesty of those who came forward to claim July as the month of their birthday.
In Happy and Sad Dollars, Tom Ketelaar won the preliminary prize, which he graciously donated to Birdies for Charity.  In the grand prize drawing, Joe Robb flexed his muscles, winning not only the first tier for the $6 prize, but went on to win $12 in Mike Bell's grand prize game.  I guess it just goes to show that you can fool some of the people some of the time, but you don't want to fool with the clergy.
The Feature Attraction
The program was given by Marc Wilson, who gave a very moving presentation on his recent book, Hero Street USA.  He began with the history of the immigration of Mexican nationals from the Guanajuato state in Mexico following the Mexican revolution.  An almost unbelievable series of calamities befell these people, commencing with the devastation caused by the revolution which was centered in their state, proceeding on to starvation, disease, and the flu epidemic.  Then, when these immigrants arrived in the Silvis area, their suffering then grew from the prejudices exercised against them.  Notwithstanding this, these immigrants toiled hard and long, carving out what they could of what we refer to as the American Dream, then gave their lives for this country.  Marc closed out his presentation with brief biographies on the eight soldiers honored at Hero Street.
Future Attractions
July 13             Margo McInnis, QC Convention and Visitors Bureau
July 20             Paul Rumler, QC Passenger Rail Coalition
July 27             Justice Thomas Kilbride, Supreme Court of Illinois,
                        Third District

QUOTE FOR THE DAY
"This Sad Dollar falls into the category of 'who cares'".  - From Dale Grabau, informing the membership that Alex Rodriguez was not selected for the All Star Team representing the American League
