Volume 88 No 166 June 29, 2009
  Upcoming Events/Fundraisers/Dates
State Softball Tournament, August 7-9, 2009.  Volunteers will be needed to run the Gate and at the Beer Stand.
The Opening Act
Empress Daphne called the June 29 meeting to order.  As a special treat, Lee Schenck didn't lead us in singing but, rather, deferred to Jonathan Turner for a medley of patriotic songs performed by him and the Kiwanis Drum and Fife Corps.
Her Highness gave a very brief report on the convention, sparing the membership any details on the moonshine whiskey manufacturing tour.
Dick Fislar thanked everyone who volunteered and participated in the Kiwanis 5K run this past Saturday.  A special presentation was made to Tom Stontz for coming in fourth place in his age bracket, which goes to show that if you know somebody, it's pretty certain you can get a prize.
Tom Plechaty gave us our first announcement on the annual softball tournament to be held August 7 - 9.  Sign-up sheets were circulated.
Her Highness reminded us again that there are still a few membership booklets available if you still need one.
In the absence of Gene Smith, Daphne courageously stepped in with what would have been Gene's gentle threats on sign-ups for Birdies.
Regarding the division golf tournament, Daphne announced that the extent of the publicity disseminated on this indicates that it's to be held August 5 in Aledo.
We were all delighted to see member Tommy Smith in attendance.
Among the various Happy and Sad Dollars was one from Daryl Townsend, who announced his 50th wedding anniversary.
In Fun and Fellowship, Joe Beatty won the preliminary prize, which he graciously donated back to the Club.  Dale Grabau won the opportunity to go for the grand prize, which he assigned to the Kartel.  Don Massey was given the opportunity to play the Mike Bell Game of the Month, which Mike Bell won again.
The Feature Attraction
The program was given by Claire Peterson, Executive Director of the John Deere Classic.  Claire began by giving us a brief background and history of the program.  The tournament has come a long way despite initial adversity.  In 2008, the Classic was ranked No. 6 in terms of charitable dollars raised.  Claire explained that the current economic woes have adversely impacted the tournament in terms of sponsorships and ticket sales but that the tournament field once again is excellent and certainly worth a visit.  The field currently boasts 13 winners of major PGA tournaments.
Future Attractions
July 6               Marc Wilson, author of "Hero Street, USA"
July 13             Margo McInnis, QC Convention and Visitors Bureau
July 20             Paul Rumler, QC Passenger Rail Coalition
July 27             Justice Thomas Kilbride, Supreme Court of Illinois,
                        Third District
