Saturday, June 27th. Kiwanis 5K Race, Sunset Marina. We need volunteers to assist with the annual K5K for approximately two hours in the morning - 7 am to 9 am. Please contact Craig Knobloch (craig.knobloch@modern-woodmen.org) for more information or to sign up to volunteer, or to participate!

The Opening Act
|
Empress Daphne called the June 22 meeting
to order. For the first time in a while,
both the Queen and her court were all in attendance. Entertainment was provided by Jonathan Turner
and The Tootsie Wootsie singers.
Craig
Knobloch gave us our last informational piece on the Kiwanis 5K Sprint. Craig would appreciate support both from
runners, as well as volunteers, who are good at giving directions.
Queen
Daphne reminded us again that membership directories are available for those
who like to stay in touch with fellow members.
Gene
Smith gave his weekly admonishment on Birdies for Charity. As with virtually every sector of the
economy, the Classic is fighting the tough economic times, so support of Club
members would be greatly appreciated.
Among
our guests was recently graduated Rock Island High School senior, Tara
Vandegriff. Tara was the President of
the Rock Island High School Key Club this past year, graduated at the top of
her class, and received our Club's Rock Island High School graduate
scholarship. Tara was in attendance with
her mother and grandmother.
With
all members of Queen Daphne's court in attendance, we were able to proceed with the annual awards
for perfect attendance. Congratulations
to all who received their membership pin tags.
It is certainly a tribute to all those who serve.
In
Fun and Fellowship, that renowned golf aficionado, Marty Katz, received two
complimentary tickets to the Classic next week.
Mike Swartz won the preliminary prize, which he graciously donated back
to the Club. The Kartel won the
opportunity to go for the grand prize and, apparently, as the Cardinals go, so
does that Cardinal fan, Dick Fislar, who managed to win a whopping $5 which
still kept the Kartel in deep Cardinal red.

The Feature Attraction
|
The program was given by new Rock
Island Mayor, Dennis Pauley. He began
his presentation by giving an update on the recount activities which have gone
on for several days. Dennis also gave an
overview of the two members of the Rock Island City Council. He followed with updates on notable issues
being addressed by the Council, including the renaming of Ninth Street to
recognize Dr. Martin Luther King, Armory Park, the City budget and the impact
that state and federal politicizing have on it, and plans for even more
accommodating use of the District.
