Scoreboard Installed The scoreboard for the Rock Island Girls Softball diamond has now been installed. The Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs each donated $1500 towards this project. The League is awaiting word on a grant to be able to install lights on the new field, and then this long-awaited project will be complete!

The Opening Act
|
Queen
Daphne called the meeting to order, and Jonathan Turner provided entertainment
along with his "I'm a Celebrity: Get Me
Out of Here" All Stars.
We
were all delighted to see John Marx in attendance with us.
In
the absence of Gene Smith, Queen Daphne reminded us of our Club's Birdies for
Charity push.
John
Califf reported that the Club rolle bolle teams performed extremely well in
Atkinson and that there was hardly a bolle that did not get rolle-d.
Daphne
gave us an advance warning of the annual division golf meet which will be held
in Aledo this year on August 5. More to
follow.
Dave
Umphrey reported on the continuing need for volunteers to work at Church of
Peace this summer in conjunction with its summer youth lunch program.
What
would have been the highlight of the meeting would have been the annual club
meeting attendance recognition, but since the Club officer with responsibility
for this presentation was not in attendance, well, you get the point.
Daphne
reported with excitement on the upcoming Kiwanis Convention in Nashville,
Tennessee. Anyone interested in
attending, at no cost to the Club, of course, should let Daphne know as soon as
possible since she needs to know how many will be packing into her car. The same goes for the annual District
Convention at the Marriott Lincolnshire August 6 - 9.
Tom
Hanson reported that the next Interclub meeting will be in Annawan on June
22. The highlight of that meeting will
be presentation of the Traveling Gavel.
There
was a number of Happy and Celebration Dollars, the most significant of which
recognized Mr. and Mrs. Bob VanDeVoorde's 50th wedding anniversary.
Craig
Knobloch reported that his son would not be defending his title in the annual
Kiwanis 5K Stumble, so if you're interested in being Leader of the Pack, make
sure you sign up.
In
the absence of Mike "Mr. Perfect Attendance" Bell, the awesome responsibilities
of running the Fun and Fellowship game fell to past President Steve Schroder. Mark Schwiebert won the preliminary drawing,
which he graciously donated back to the Club.
The Kartel won the opportunity to go for the grand prize, but Mark
Amacher managed to lose a game understood possibly by no one other than Steve.
In
a surprise presentation, your Editor was presented with a Legion of Honor in
recognition of 30 years of membership.

The Feature Attraction
|
The program was led by Roger
Ruthhart and related to a book recently published on the John Looney
history. Looney was a well-known figure
during his time and was a genuine national crime figure, not just a local
thug. Volumes of information are
available on Looney and the challenge in producing this book was in reviewing
all of the information and sources and distilling all of it into a factual
recounting of the history of this man.
