Kiwanis Night at the QC Flames, March 7th
Rose Day, Wednesday, April 22nd

Opening Act
President Denise Ormsby called our meeting
to order. Entertainment was again
provided by Jonathan Turner and his Rock Island Kiwanis Traveling All Stars and
Motor Kings.
The
announcements began with Interclubs.
There will be an Interclub with Golden K on February 26. The annual Mega Interclub meeting will be
held March 17 at The Lodge. This year,
it will be a dinner instead of a lunch.
Lobby the daylights out of your Club officers if you want to get them to
pay for your meal again.
March
7 will be Kiwanis Hockey Night. $10 will
get you admission to a great hockey game, a hot dog and popcorn.
Queen
Daphne gave us a teaser on the upcoming bowling tournament. She probably didn't want to raise the
excitement level too high, but be aware that this is coming up soon. It's never too early to run your favorite
polyester outfit through your gentle cycle.
Club
members were delighted to have past President Jerry Upchurch in our midst. Jerry Jones presented the program and there
was a brief but conspicuous Rod Jennings sighting as well.
The
Club survey was completed and a pretty fair response from Club members was
given. Make sure you review a copy.
There
was a number of Happy and Sad Dollars, not the least of which was one from
President Denise over the excitement she and a friend had at the Midwinter
Conference in Decatur, Illinois.
Mike
Bell brought us up to date on news from the most recent Board meeting. Rose Day will be coming up in April. Peanut Day will be over Mother's Day weekend,
so you no longer need to be concerned how you'll be celebrating that
event. Grants will be presented at our
March 2 meeting. Make sure you contact a
Club officer by March 1 if you might be interested in serving as an officer or
director in the Club.
In
Fun and Fellowship, the Kartel won the preliminary prize on an investment of
only $6 in order to win its $5 prize.
Jerry Upchurch was welcomed back by winning a chance at the grand prize
but, once again, Mike Bell managed to dash all expectations of sensitivity by
doing that voodoo he do so well.

The Feature Attraction
The program was given by Club
member, Jerry Jones, Executive Director of the Martin Luther
King Center. He began his presentation by showing a number
of slides from the last Christmas party.
Over 75 individuals from a number of organizations volunteered to
assist. Over 1,500 people attended the
gathering and 837 children received gifts.
The December, 2008 party was truly a record-setting and much-appreciated
event. Jerry also brought the Club up to
date on the Center's capital campaign which is progressing well and which will
culminate in an enlarged community room.
Finally, Jerry discussed a reading program to be started at the Center
beginning in March. This program will
serve children between the ages of 6 and 10.
It is anticipated that no more than 3 children would be assigned to a
volunteer reader. Books would be made
available for the readers and would be selected in advance. The program will go on for approximately 10
weeks, would only take about 30 minutes per session, and would probably start
around 4:00 p.m. on Monday
afternoons, although Jerry said that accommodations could be made. This looks like another excellent and worthwhile
opportunity for community service by our Club members.
