Dear Friends of At Home Solutions:

Have you noticed that our lives are just getting busier and busier?

Juggling family, friends, work, vacation (what vacation?) and supporting aging parents can be a lot - taking care of ourselves through all of this can be very daunting.

How do you find relief during your busy, stressful days? Could it be exercising, quiet time, reading, music, spirituality, zoning out in front of a TV? Where do you go to center yourself again?

For me, volunteering has allowed me to become more in tune with other's needs, grateful for my health and all that has been given to me. Now that my responsibilities have increased and changed these last 5 years, I can't volunteer as much as I have liked to in the past. I truly miss it.

In our blog this month we give ideas on how you can give a little of your time to make a big difference in someone else's life.

Minnesota ranks third with 37% of our population volunteering! We're only slightly behind Iowa and Utah. We should be very proud of how we give of ourselves despite our hectic schedules.

Some of our staff accompany our clients on volunteer outings: keeping them connected to places, events and activities that really brighten their day. Helping sort a clothing closet, organizing a food pantry and getting bulk mailings together have been some of the activities we have done with our clients to keep them engaged.

For your peace of mind and comfort, it is possible to stay safe, secure and independent with compassionate Caregivers and Home Health Care Services. I am thankful for all of you who have referred us to your loved ones, clients, neighbors or friends who needed assistance.

Please continue to keep us in mind and contact me personally if I can be of any support to you or a loved one.

In Gratitude,

Kristin Kopp

Elders and Families Reach Shared Decisions

When is it "Self-Neglect"?

A growing concern for families and caregivers is not knowing when to intervene with elders who strive to be independent but may show self-neglect behaviors. While most families want to ensure their parents' independence, many fear for their safety.

Caregivers may be concerned about potential for abuse and neglect if an elder does not have enough or appropriate care and oversight over finances and health related decisions. Complicating matters is the lack of a clear definition and interventions for self-neglect.

How might families and caregivers plan ahead to prevent or avert a crisis and address what they see as self-neglect?

Mediation assures a safe and impartial process for people as they consider their options and solutions while preserving relationships critical to the elder's quality of life.

Travel Trips for Seniors looking for a hassle-free vacation

Statistics are proving that age 70 is really the new 50. According to the U.S. Travel Association, travelers ages 65 and older represented 21% of all leisure travelers in 2010. From taking a trip with their grandchildren across country, to living out dreams in far, exotic destinations, today's seniors are choosing to enjoy their golden years traveling.

Staying safe and being prepared when traveling is more important than ever in this age group. Here are some special considerations for senior travelers looking for a hassle-free travel experience:

1)    Pack carefully: Don't forget that extra comfortable pair of shoes, hat, and sunglasses to protect the face. Instead of taking a lot of extra clothes that make for a heavier bag to lug around, check into laundry options close to where you'll be staying.

2)    Visit your doctor: Schedule a checkup before any major trip to discuss your travel plans and get written prescriptions for any medications you'll need. Keep your prescriptions in their original containers so that they can be identified properly.

3)    Plan with extra care: Stay organized and compile any contact information and travel reservations to keep in a folder to ensure you don't have problems. Put emergency numbers and family contact information in there too. Gather maps and make sure your passport is up to date several months ahead of time.

4) Ask the airlines for help: A family recently asked the airline for assistance at check in.  The airline walked them through security, to the gate, and even made sure they got seated on the plane safely & comfortably for a hassle free flight.  What a great service to go above & beyond for your customers!

So get out there and enjoy your much needed and deserved vacation!

Hi, my name is Linda K. I came on board last February and have enjoyed working with senior citizens . My background has been medical my whole career. I became a radiation therapist and treated cancer patients of all ages. Each patient has a goal that they want to achieve. Many now are cured. That is also so true when I visit At Home Solutions' clients. They are goal oriented, too. Some of those goals are small. It is great to see them smile and enjoy life. Outside of work, I enjoy hiking, tennis, biking, and love to travel with my husband.
