...A POUND OF CURE
Avoiding and Responding to Workplace Accidents
According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics there were 3.7 million work-related accidents reported in the United States for the year 2008. Over a million of those cases involved injuries that required days away from work, with an average of eight lost days of work per employee.
Given the frequency of work-related accidents and the cost to employers, implementing a Health and Safety Protection Plan is advised. Of note, this is a best practice recommended by the United States Department of Labor's Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA).
There are four (4) basic elements to a quality Health and Safety Protection Plan:
- An competent manager (or team) must be selected to administer the plan;
- Continual analysis of the workplace and potential hazards;
- Prompt implementation of methods for preventing and controlling hazards; and
- Proper training of staff relative to the plan, the hazards and prevention of injuries.
The key is to make the plan an integral part of every employee's day to day operation.
It is also a good practice to implement a system of periodic review of past accidents as a means of further educating your staff. In addition, this review may prompt the employer to update its Health and Safety Protection Plan.
