2010 continues to be challenging for Operation Care, as it was for many people in our county and across our nation. We believe that a suffering economy leads to more suffering in homes. We have seen an increase in services provided by our programs, and an increase in the number of children and their moms needing help. We attribute these increases to the ongoing economic downturn, and the continued support and education in our community to raise awareness of our programs.

Director's Letter

Hello Amador County!

I was recently appointed as the new Executive Director for Operation Care, so I thought I would introduce myself to you. I began my journey here on October 11, 2010. I have been delighted by the warm welcome I received from the Board of Directors and staff of Operation Care, and by the people of Amador County. I have felt right at home, and look forward to my journey with you. I am from Red Bluff California where I resided for 22 years; I enjoy the small town atmosphere and look forward to learning the history and culture of Amador County.

It is my philosophy that the family is the basic fiber that holds this community and our country together.  In order to grow, learn, and more importantly have good health, a person must feel safe. Operation Care is committed to offering a safe, supportive environment for all victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.  We offer our community choices that will enable them to effect change in their lives through education, prevention, and intervention. I am honored to be part of this community and team.

Jeff Holman Donates Vehicle

Jeff Holman Auto Center recently donated a vehicle to help with transportation for clients of Operation Care. Over the past year, our staff and volunteers provided transportation 570 times for individuals to get to safe shelter, appointments, court, or other locations. We have a policy of reimbursement for mileage costs, however, a significant increase in residents at the safe house coupled with a reduction in bus service resulted in costs significantly exceeding budget.

Earlier this year, Soroptimist International of Amador County approached us with a request to partner on a project that would involve some of the Soroptimist members while also helping victims. They had $5,600 in a certificate of deposit that was coming due and they wanted to put it to good use.  Together, we came up with a plan to search for a vehicle to help with the transportation issue and formed a committee to begin the search. When we approached Jeff Holman, he immediately offered to take a look at an upcoming auction and try to find something suitable for the program, within the price range.

The following Monday, Jeff called one of our committee members and said, "Can you come over here? I have something to show you." When she arrived, Jeff told her that he had given it a lot of thought and that he would like to give Operation Care a vehicle. He had taken a vehicle that he had, and his service department tuned it up, changed all the hoses, fixed anything that was in need of repair, installed four new tires, paid the DMV transfer fees and just handed her the keys. This wonderful donation will allow us to use the funds from Soroptimist to extend the transportation program considerably. The money that would have gone to the cost of a vehicle can now be used for fuel, insurance, repairs, and maintenance. We are so very grateful to Jeff Holman and his staff for their generosity! After handing over the keys, Jeff Holman humbly smiled and said, "I wanted to do something to help. It is not about me, it is what needs to be done."

Thank you Jeff Holman Auto Center and
