Valentines Day Any Day for Teens

Valentine's Day Any Day 2

Valentine's Day Any Day - 1On Friday, March 13th, about twenty seventh and eighth graders gathered at American Legion Hall for Operation Care's first "Valentine's Day Any Day." A great evening of fun, including music, games, and a little bit of education about healthy dating relationships and friendships helped to show the kids that any day can be a special day, and that we don't have to wait for Valentine's Day or other special dates to treat our friends and partners with kindness and respect. The event was originally scheduled to be a "dance", but ended up as a night of games and fun.

After the occasion, Tammie Crabtree, Operation Care's program manager and one of the event's organizers said, "I think the main thing we learned was that although seventh and eighth graders are exposed to a lot of adult things, they really just enjoy being kids with adult attention and encouragement. Believe it or not, these kids had the most fun playing games such as Duck-Duck-Goose, Red Light-Green Light, and Musical Chairs. After thinking about it over the weekend, I realized that just because our children are exposed to adult issues, it doesn't mean they are ready for all the information they are being given, and when we take time to really talk to our kids we will find that what they really want is our attention."

A national survey on teens and dating abuse revealed that an alarming number of teens in dating relationships are being controlled, threatened and humiliated in person, and through cell phones and the Internet. The research also reveals that a significant majority of parents are completely unaware of dating abuse and the dangers facing their teens. "Valentine's Day Any Day" was held to help educate the kids about safe and healthy relationships, and to help make them aware of some of the warning signals, such as harassment, name calling, stalking, excessive texting and other controlling behaviors that will affect their relationships. If a student is being abused, harassed or stalked, their mind is racing with fear, and they cannot concentrate on the important things like school, sports, homework, and healthy relationships.

Bank of Amador/American River Bankshares Foundation grants $10K to Operation Care

Operation Care was the recipient of a $10,000 grant from Bank of Amador and the American River Bankshares Foundation for the second time in four years. "We are so honored to receive this grant," said Lynn Shield, executive director for Operation Care. "Many times, grant-makers want to see their monies go to new programs and services. But, when the grants end, the programs suffer because there is not enough on-going income to sustain them. Non-restricted funds like these allow us to enhance our current programs and provide the additional wrap-around services for victims and their families as we help them on their road to recovery."

Bill Price, president of the Operation Care board of directors, noted, "This is especially appreciated during such a difficult economy when money is so tight for everyone. We are so grateful that Bank of Amador plays such an active role in the community and shares in our mission of helping those most vulnerable in our society."

"Bank of Amador is proud to partner with so many great local non-profit organizations that work so hard to help those in need here," added Wayne Garibaldi, regional president, Bank of Amador. "In these challenging times, Bank of Amador knows how important it is to support our community organizations to our fullest extent. Operation Care provides vital education and outreach in their domestic violence and sexual assault support services, and we know our $10,000 grant will stretch their capabilities further."

Dear friends,

The year ahead, given the economic turmoil we are all facing, suggests a difficult year for all of us.  While Operation Care gets much of its funding from federal and state grants, we cannot operate without donations from community benefactors, private donors and our ongoing fundraising efforts.  We are uncertain how California's budget crisis will affect us so we are taking steps to examine our costs, even though 84% of our operating budget is applied toward client care.

It may appear that we are fully sponsored by large donations but we are still short of our fundraising goal of $50,000 for our fiscal year July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009. We have significant plans to continue to help victims of sexual assault and domestic violence in the coming year.  If you can help, it would be much appreciated.

From the staff, Board of Directors and volunteers at Operation Care, we'd like to thank you for your support and extend our wishes for a life filled with happy and healthy relationships.
