We'll Miss you, Jack!
John "Jack" Hitchcock Fitzpatrick, 88, a passionate and involved citizen of the Berkshires for over fifty years, died peacefully at home on July 23, 2011. Many of you will remember "Senator," along with his wife Jane who survived him, as the ever-cheerful and witty owners of the Red Lion from 1968 until daughter Nancy took over in 1993. For over 25 years Jack enjoyed playing Santa Claus at The Red Lion on the Saturday before Christmas. A life-long public servant and member of the "Greatest Generation," Jack served in the Europe during World War Two, receiving a Bronze Star for valiant efforts behind enemy lines. Always an activist and participant in community affairs, Jack was a diehard Republican and served the First Berkshire Senate District from 1973 to 1980. Jack's many lasting friendships from his Senate years crossed both sides of the aisle. Senator Fitzpatrick received many citations from the Commonwealth including the Golden Dome Citation for distinguished service and honorary doctorates from several colleges and universities in New England. In August 2010 the Town of Stockbridge named the town green adjacent to The Red Lion Inn for Jane and Jack Fitzpatrick. Jane and Jack Fitzpatrick are widely known for their philanthropy. The Boston Symphony Orchestra, The Berkshire Theatre Festival, The Norman Rockwell Museum, Jacob's Pillow, Shakespeare & Company, MASS MoCA, The Mahaiwe Performing Art Center and The Colonial Theatre and The United Way are among scores of organizations and individuals in the Berkshires and beyond to receive funding from them personally or through their foundation. Jack was proudest, however, of creating hundreds of jobs, both at Country Curtains and the inns (both the Red Lion and Blantyre, owned by daughter Ann). He felt enormous affection for and gratitude toward the employees who were partners in his success. We are all the richer for having known him and miss his larger-than-life presence dearly.
