Pissaro's People - Now until October 2

Pissarro's People offers a fresh look at the Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro by examining his portraits, harvest scenes, and market views through the lens of his personal relationships, profound social and economic concerns, and anarchist beliefs. Based on new scholarship by curator and leading Pissarro scholar Richard R. Brettell, this visually stunning exhibition brings together some of the artist's most iconic figural works with lesser-known pictures from private and public collections from around the world. Learn more about the exhibition here.

Spaces: Photographs by Candida Hfer & Thomas Struth - Now until September 5

The large-scale photographs by Candida Hfer and Thomas Struth featured in this exhibition offer distinct but connected perspectives on the ways individuals interact with the spaces they inhabit. Trained together at the Kunstakademie (Arts Academy) Dsseldorf in Germany in the 1970s, Hfer and Struth have embraced photography as a medium of social, cultural, and historical purpose, choosing public spaces as their subjects.

Struth's works capture church and museum visitors engaged in the act of looking, as we, the viewers of the photographs, observe them from a physical and temporal distance. This reflexive impulse allows us to experience several historical moments at once, both inside and outside of the picture's frame. Check out the exhibition's microsite here.

Unconscious Convergence: The Work of Debi Pendell @ NAACO Gallery
June 23 - July 25

NAACO Gallery (just around the corner from Porches) presents a series of new, layered, acrylic collages evolving from a spontaneous and unconscious convergence of several earlier experimental directions the artist had taken. This series is based on the artist's intrigue with how we humans "read" various symbol system and how we use our imaginations to add and/or subtract in order to make sense of what we see.

NAACO Gallery (North Adams Artists' Co-Op Gallery) is located at 33 Main Street in downtown North Adams. Hours: Mon, Wed-Fri, 11-6; Sat 10-6; Sun 10-4

The Grass is Green by Karin Stack @ MCLA Gallery 51 June 23 - July 24
Stack's artworks are investigations of landscape, using a variety of modes and methods. She has one foot in historic tradition, one in new media and another in lies and deception.
In this recent body of work, she has created a suite of images that feature mash-ups of new and old: perfected photographic landscapes using fake materials, etchings with digital overprinting, an animation she built in 3D modeling software, and collages and paintings based on that animation.

Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Gallery 51 is located at 51 Main Street in North Adams. Gallery hours are daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call 413-664-8718, or visit their website.

djust announced: M.Ward @ Mass moca August 12
MWard

Getting his start in the Portland folk scene, M.Ward is now one of the most acclaimed American musicians of the decade. Ward's honey-soaked vocals, deft finger-picking and beguiling lyrics caught the attention of fans like Bright Eyes with whom he is currently on tour. As the enigmatic "Him" of the duo She & Him with fan-turned-friend, Zooey Deschanel, Ward acted as producer, guitarist, and arranger on their internationally acclaimed album Volume One which was inspired by the sun-soaked sounds of '60s California pop, an altogether more up-tempo sound than Ward's fans were familiar with but one which proved his adaptability and cemented his reputation as a world-class producer. The show is Friday, August 12, 2011, 8:00 pm in Courtyard C or Hunter Center, tickets are $25 advance/$29 day of show..

Memery: Imitation, Memory, and Internet Culture
Apr 3, 2011, 11:00 am-Jul 31, 2011

An "Internet meme" is a form or concept that spreads via the Web, whether through email forwarding, viral videos, or blogs. Memes tend to lose our attention as quickly as they capture it. Although they may recede from view, memes never fully cease to exist, surviving in the backs of our minds and in the ever-expanding network of servers that make up the Internet. In the realm of digital memory, what seems to have disappeared may simply be lying dormant in the recesses of a hard drive.

Does the Internet only consist of ephemera, or does it contain something more permanent? What roles do time and memory play in an ever-evolving online world? What is the relationship between passing fads and enduring icons? Taking these questions as its point of departure, Memery examines the connections between memes and memory in online culture.
