Babes in Arms Berkshire Theatre Festival - Unicorn Theatre Now through Aug 28 |  "The Lady Is A Tramp", "My Funny Valentine", "Johnny One Note". The song list for this high-spirited musical reads like a Greatest Hits for writers Rodgers and Hart. Babes In Arms, the original "let's put on a musical" musical, tells the story of a few determined teens and their fight to keep their independence by producing their own show, turning out great song after great song along the way and inspiring the classic film starring Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland. Annie Robinson, Lectures and Victorian Tea
Ventfort Hall Mansion and Gilded Age Museum August 4, 4:00pm
Architectural historian Annie Robinson is slated to give an illustrated presentation on "Peabody and Stearns: Country Houses and Seaside Cottages." The speaker will autograph copies of her new book of the same title during a Victorian Tea. The lecture is the sixth in Ventfort Hall's 2010 Summer Lecture Series. The Hancock Shaker village will be hosting a lively and inspiring conversation with renowned culinary professional (AKA food fanatic) and farm to table advocate Amy Cotler, as she discusses the Locavore movement, which emphasizes the many benefits of local eating and seasonal cooking. A recognized pioneer in the field, she was the founding director of Berkshire Grown, an early local farm and food advocacy organization that has become a national model.

August is Around the Corner...

Maggie Mailer and Nanny Vonnegut will converse about their lives as painters and daughters of noted authors Norman Mailer and Kurt Vonnegut. This DISH+DINE coincides with Maggie Mailer's current exhibition "The Balloonists", on view at Ferrin Gallery through September 18th. On August 5, 1850, Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne met for the first time on a hike and picnic at Monument Mountain. The two went on to form a great friendship. To celebrate the anniversary of what is termed "the most important picnic in American literary history," hikers are invited to climb the mountain with Gordon Hyatt who will host the event on behalf of the Berkshire Historical Society and the Trustees of Reservations. The hike will be followed with a buffet lunch at Melville's home, Arrowhead in Pittsfield featuring some of the same menu that Hawthorne and Melville once shared.
