The Waypoint at MASS MoCA

Provocative film and theater at MASS MoCA !

American Casino
Thursday, January 21, 2010, 7:30 pm
The first in MASS MoCA's series of Lie! Cheat! Steal! Fake It! Docs looking at complicated ethical equations, this film by Leslie and Andrew Cockburn is "a powerful and shocking look at the subprime lending scandal," according to Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz. "If you want to understand how the US financial system failed and how mortgage companies ripped off the poor, see this film." David Denby in The New Yorker, called the film "a terrific documentary" and "a lucid and comprehensive picture of a rotten system."

The Waypoint
Saturday, February 6, 2010, 8:00 pm
This new play by Iris Dauterman that came out of The Berkshire Fringe's EarlyStages playwriting program, will be developed here during a residency that culminates in a work-in-progress showing. The action centers on Shelby, whose unexpected pregnancy reveals her concern that her broken past will make her unfit to bring another life into this world, and Tristan, her soon-to-be-born baby who is hesitant to make his way to earth. The production weaves rich narrative and magical realism with an original soundscore to reveal the epic and often unexpected journey into life. Bazaar Productions presents dynamic new works by emerging artists for three weeks each summer during The Berkshire Fringe. The Waypoint is directed by Sara Katzoff with soundscore by Peter Wise.

The Williamstown Theatre Festival in Winter

February 5, 2010- 7:00 pm
The Clark joins forces with the Williamstown Theatre Festival for a staged reading of Yasmina Reza's international hit Art. When an art lover buys what is in essence a pure white painting for a horse-choking sum, his best friend goes ballistic, and a third friend gets caught in the middle. This three man play questions the meaning of modern art and modern friendships and how they're sometimes not all that different. How would you feel about your best friend if he suddenly did something you thought was so colossally stupid, it made you doubt the very basis of the friendship? Hailed as "a remarkably wise, witty and intelligent comedy" by The London Times, Art is sure to tickle your funny bone and brain. You won't want to miss this rare opportunity to experience WTF in the winter. This free event is co-presented by the Williamstown Theatre Festival and the Clark. Reservations are required; call 413 458 0524.

Remember, admission to the Clark is FREE this time of year!

The Colonial - January 2010

The Colonial Continues to Mix It Up

This lovingly revitalized Gilded Age architectural gem, located 25 minutes from Porches in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, offers a fun mix of concerts, comedy and theater. In addition to a full production of Cabaret this month, the Colonial is presenting the Smithereens and comic Steven Wright this month.

Brandishing heavy guitars and a shameless fetish for British Invasion Pop, The Smithereens carved their niche on rock radio and earned a reputation as a huge concert attraction with songs like, "A Girl Like You," "Only A Memory," and "Blood & Roses." Now the all original-member group are touring their greatest hits and paying homage to the music of The Who and The Beatles. Friday, January 22, 8PM. Tickets start at $25.

When Steven Wright says "I put tape on the mirrors in my house so I don't accidentally walk through into another dimension," you know his trademark comedy comes from an off-center perspective. Wright is an Oscar winning comedian with dry wit and a deadpan delivery. He is one of the hottest acts to catch today, selling out venues worldwide. He even smiles once in a while, "every so often, I like to stick my head out the window, look up, and smile for a satellite picture." Catch him on Sunday, January 24, at 7PM. Tickets from 7PM.
