Meet the Artist... On December 12, between 4 - 6PM, meet artist Iñigo Manglano Ovalle, and get your first look at his new exhibition, Gravity is a Force to Be Reckoned With, in the football field-sized Building 5 gallery. Enjoy light refreshments at the opening reception for MASS MoCA's newest exhibition. The installation is based upon Mies van der Rohe's uncompleted project, The 50x50 House (1951). In it, a square structure, open to view on all four sides through glass walls has been constructed at approximately half scale and inverted, the ceiling of the original becoming the sculpture's floor, the floor becoming the ceiling, and all interior elements such as Mies-designed furniture and partition walls installed upside down. Gravity will seem held at bay.
...then Participate in Zoom! You may be surprised at the start of Zoom when ZviDance artistic director Zvi Gotheiner asks you to not only leave your cell phones on but to actually encourages you to text and take photos during the performance. Cell phones are a crucial part of the piece which will use dance, music, and video projection to explore the evolving landscape of virtual communities. The piece will premiere in New York in April, but you can get a sneak preview and assist in Zoom's creative development during this special showing in North Adams. 8PM, December 12.

99¢ & up
In these dire times of shrinking bank accounts, government bail-outs, and increasingly abstract concepts of value, there is an ever-growing need for creative survival and re-inventions of "worth." For your consideration, MCLA's Gallery 51 is offering a selection of small, affordable works: in a sense these objects are "priceless," but with a price tag somewhere between "99 cents" and "up." Go to the opening reception on December 3rd (5-7PM) and get "first dibs" on all the good stuff! Through January 3, 2010.

The Clark Offers Irish Holiday Merriment Long before Riverdance, ordinary Irish men and women in hobnailed boots knocked sparks off the flagstone floors with jigs, reels and hornpipes, and the rafters rang with the fiery music of the fiddle, bodhran, tin whistle, and the mesmerizing uilleann pipes. Tomáseen Foley's A Celtic Christmas lovingly recreates the joy and
innocence of a night before Christmas in a farmhouse in the remote
parish of Teampall an Ghleanntain in the west of Ireland, when
neighbors gather around the fire to grace the long wintry night with
the laughter of their stories, the joy of their music, and dances they
always said they were much too old for. "A Celtic Christmas" features Grammy-award winning guitarist William Coulter, traditional sean-nos singer and harpist Sile Denvir from Connemara Gaeltacht in the west of Ireland, world-champion level Irish dancer Katie Linnane on Irish fiddle, and world-champion level Irish dancer Brian Bigley on uilleann pipes, whistles, and flute. December 4, 2009. $28 (members and children $25). Call 413 458 0524 for tickets or follow the link below...
