My understanding is that there are two radioactive isotopes, Iodine 131 and Cesium 137 potentially being released in the radiation dust.Radioactive Iodine has a short active life and concentrates in the thyroid gland, and can cause thyroid dysfunction and thyroid cancer.
The most common medical recommendation is taking potassium iodine. Proper levels of iodine block the receptors on the thyroid so the radioactive iodine can't bind to it. Taking iodine has been proven to prevent thyroid cancers caused by radiation exposure but it will not reduce your risk of all cancers and all side effects of radiation exposure.
Iodine is excreted and recycled through the body in 24-48h cycles so it is important that you have good iodine stores in your body before the radiation comes to the west coast. So now is the time to optimize your body's mineral stores and increase low dose and food forms of iodine.
Cesium 137 can remain active for 30 years or longer and can be stored in the muscle, liver and red blood cells. Damage from this toxin can be minimized by consuming substances that bind toxins, like sodium alginate, and taking important antioxidants that reduce free-radical injury.
My radiation prevention preferences are listed as follows. Please note, these are simply recommendations and not a replacement for consulting with your physician.
