I will be starting an Essential Cleanse this week in San Francisco and a Virtual Cleanse for those outside of the Bay Area the following week.

Fall is a great time to cleanse. As the season changes and we start to gear up for the Holiday Season, this is an ideal time to lay the foundations for a healthy immune system and a calm and balanced mind. 

As the weather becomes colder and windy, it is important to keep in mind that cleansing and raw foods can be inherently cooling, which can aggravate the mind and body this time of year.  We cover strategies to support healthy cleansing with the seasons during my Essential Cleanse Program. 

Even if you aren't cleansing, you can learn more about staying healthy during this seasonal transition, when I discuss Ayurveda, the Vata dosha and simple strategies to balance it below.

Ye Ol' Vata Imbalance

According to Ayurvedic principles, this is the time of year where people tend towards Vata imbalances.  Vata is one of the three doshas, or constitutional types in this ancient medical system, and is characterized by air, movement, dryness and cold. Ideally, we need our doshas to be balanced to be healthy and happy.  I think of a Vata imblance like a leaf on a tree quivering in the wind,   Fine for a leaf, but when this happens to our mind and body, we tend to get anxious, multi-task, and rush around in ineffective overwhelm.

As like tends to stimulate like in Ayurveda, cool weather, seasons, wind and cooling foods will increase Vata tendancies. Some physical manifestations of this may include increased dryness of hair and skin, tremors, constipation. Many of my patients experience increased anxiety this time of year.  Also, I see an increase in herpes outbreaks (oral and genital). Due to the fact that the world currently tends to have a global Vata imbalance (go go go, do do do), it can be even more challenging to balance our individual imbalance. I can empathize, as this is my personal imbalance and work, but implementing these food and lifestylke strategies has been very helpful to tame my Vata gone wild.

Some key concepts here are: grounding, roots, earth, inhalation and warmth.

Strategies for balancing Vata:
  • Eat warm mushy easy to digest foods-soups and stews are very grounding and nourishing
  • Naturally sweet, sour and  salty foods decrease Vata.  Think root vegetables, squashes, whole grains, soaked nuts and seeds, seaweed. Citrus fruits, figs and dried fruits.
  • Use spices like ginger, cumin, turmeric, clove cinnamon and cardomom.
  • Do not skip meals- eat at least three meals/day, ideally at the same time
  • Establish a routine for your day.  Go to bed and wake up at the same time daily
  • Stay warm and bundled up
  • Drink warm drinks- tea, water with lemon.  Avoid iced beverages
  • Self-massage with warm sesame oil before bathing
  • Meditate for 30 minutes daily
  • Focus on lengthening the inhale during yoga or exercise
