Coaching Corner - Attitude of Gratitude |
|
It would be tempting to write about goal setting in this months coaching corner as it's that time of year when we tend to take time out to review our lives, or aspects of our life. However, as I wrote about that a few months ago and the newsletter archives are available - click here - I thought I'd write about cultivating an attitude of gratitude instead.
It is very easy, with everything going on in the world at the moment, to focus on lack and what is missing from our lives at the moment, whether that be income, a job, significant relationship, health and fitness etc etc. But how often do you take time out to say thank you (to friends, family, the Universe - whoever!)? When people say thank you to you, perhaps for a gift, kind word, or other form of help, how does that make you feel? I'd be surprised if anyone reading this feels anything less than glowing, internally or visibly! And when you hear the words 'thank you' how else do you respond? - probably by wanting to help that person again. So, who has helped you today that you could say thank-you to? It doesn't matter how small a task, gift, smile you received - remember to say thank you and in return you will be blessed with more help. Why not take this a step further and start wirting a gratitude list - either mentally or preferably on paper? Set aside a few minutes each day to list everything you can think of that you are grateful for, e.g
I am grateful for the roof over my head
I am grateful that I can pay my bills
I am gratfeul that I am fit and healthy
I am grateful for the help from abc for xyz
If you've had a bad day and are struggling for things to be grateful for, I always find it easy to start with nature, e.g. I am grateful for the beautiful blue sky, I am grateful for the air we breathe, I am grateful for the sun and moon and grass under my feet.
Our minds can't be both sad and happy at the same time (or any other combination of emotions!), so if you are feeling blue, stressed, fed up of the long winter days, then starting to repeat a gratitude list to yourself can stop you plummeting even further into the blues! Try it out next time you hear your negative 'self talk' kicking in - and let me know how you get on!

| Affirmation of the Month |
|
I constantly receive incredible gifts
Learn to accept prosperity instead of exchanging it. If a friend gives you a gift or takes you to lunch, you don't have to immediately reciprocate. Allow the person to give you the gift. Accept it with joy and pleasure. You may never reciprocate to that person. You may give to someone else. If someone gives you a gift that you can't use or don't want, say " I accept with joy and pleasure and gratitude" and pass it on to someone else.
