Canon Perdido Affordable Homes update
|
Last Thursday Habitat for Humanity presented plans for our next affordable homes project, 12 new homes on Canon Perdido Street, to the Santa Barbara Planning Commission. We are pleased to share that it was a unanimous decision in favor of Habitat's project.
We hope to present the project to the Architectural Board of Review in February and have completed plans ready to submit to the Building Department this spring. If all goes according to schedule, Habitat hopes to break ground on the project later this fall. This is an exciting time as the Canon Perdido project is Habitat's largest project to date in Santa Barbara. Thank you for joining with us and making homeownership a reality for 12 additional families in our community.

Remembering Martin Luther King Jr.
| |
"Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?' " -Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
On Monday we marked Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a day in which we remember Dr. King's dream of equality for all. The MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service - a "day on, not a day off." The King Day of Service is a way to transform his life and teachings into community service that helps solve social problems.
There are many ways you can put Dr. King's ideas into practice and serve here in Santa Barbara. Habitat for Humanity relies upon volunteers to help run our ReStore and construct the low-income homes we build in our community. Additionally, we rely on volunteers to complete A Brush with Kindness home repairs and donate a Saturday to help low-income homeowners make necessary repairs to their home.

Redevelopment agency update
|
On December 29th the California Supreme Court upheld the decision to dissolve redevelopment agencies (RDAs). Habitat for Humanity has relied on RDA's funds to help construct low-income homes in Santa Barbara. The decision to dissolve RDAs will significantly affect our ability to provide affordable housing options to Santa Barbara residents who need it most.
There is some good news and we need your help. There is talk in Sacramento of setting up a set-aside fund for affordable housing. Please join Habitat in advocating for this source of funding to replace the 20% set-aside of all RDA funds that have been used by many non-profit housing providers in our community. Habitat affiliates across the state have pledged to work with the Governor and legislators to ensure that the elimination of redevelopment does not destroy the ability to provide affordable housing. Together we can give voice to the increasing need and advise our legislators in Sacramento that this important source of funding should not be eliminated. Please contact your legislators and let them know that you support setting aside funds for affordable housing. |
Volunteer Spotlight
| |
A big thank you to our ReStore volunteers who helped make 2011 the ReStore's most successful year-to-date. The ReStore relies entirely on volunteers to keep the doors open, donations processed, and shelves stocked. The ReStore is a big funding source for our affiliate and pays a majority of Habitat's operating costs. This in turn means that our fundraising efforts go directly to the building of affordable homes in Santa Barbara.
Join us in thanking the 30+ ReStore volunteers who clock over 100 cumulative hours per week. Because of their support the ReStore averages 14 donation pick-ups and 20 donation drop-offs per week. That's a lot of inventory to sort, price, and stock!
BUT...we are in need of volunteers. The ReStore is open Tuesdays through Saturdays so there are many hours that need to be filled. If you are available to help, please sign up online or attend our next volunteer orientation on Saturday, 2/11 at 10am in the ReStore. |
