Well-funded opposition emerges to Iowa measure

Organized opposition has surfaced to the Iowa's Water and Land Legacy amendment. The measure would
establish a constitutionally protected Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund, to be funded the next time the Legislature increases the sales tax.

The
amendment has strong support among a wide range of groups, including farmers, who would receive a substantial amount of new funding to control soil erosion and clean their drinking water sources. Watch the campaign's new TV ad, featuring real farmers.

Many thanks to everyone who made a donation to fight the opposition campaign. If you haven't made a contribution, there is still time to help us reach more voters with our positive message that the trust fund will help Iowa clean its drinking water, prevent floods, preserve agricultural soils, and protect wildlife habitat. Maine Question 3 down to the wire
Maine voters have passed four bonds since 1987 for Land for Maine's Future, but polls predict an extremely close vote on this year's $10 million bond to extend the program. The campaign still needs money to reinforce in voters' minds its strongest message: investing in Land for Maine's Future secures the state's economic mainstays of tourism, farming, forestry, fishing and outdoor recreation. Every dollar spent on land conservation by Land for Maine's Future has brought in $3 in tax revenues. Small campaigns that make a big difference

Many of the campaigns the Conservation Campaign supports are for a modest bond or dedicated tax in one municipality or county. But to the communities involved, having the funds to protect a local forest or wetland, keep a dozen farms in business, or create a neighborhood park can make an enormous difference.

Step by step, preserving and creating outdoor open space adds up to a water supply protected, a local farm market preserved, a wonderful place for families and friends to get outdoors. It means preserving that intangible but very real feeling of community and character that makes a town a good place to live.

That's why so many of these campaigns start with ordinary citizens who care about their communities. From Belmont, Masssachusetts to Tigard, Oregon, from Dorchester, South Carolina to West Valley City, Utah, find out about local campaigns around the country through the Conservation Campaign website.
