Help Save NY's Environment Fund
Governor Paterson is proposing drastic cuts to New York State's major source of funding for land conservation and many other essential environmental programs.
As
legislators begin to negotiate the budget with the governor, a broad
coalition including the Conservation Campaign has launched the "We Love New York" campaign to build
public awareness and press the Legislature to fully fund the Environmental Protection Fund (EPF). Learn more about the campaign and how you can help!
Supported primarily by revenue from the real estate transfer tax, the EPF is dedicated specifically
for open space and farmland preservation, parks and zoos, wastewater
treatment, solid waste management, and other environmental needs. The governor's proposed budget slashes the fund by $69 million, 33 percent from last year's level of $222 million and 52 percent from the amount it was scheduled to reach this year by law. In addition, the state has "borrowed" $500 million from the fund in recent years for other uses, jeopardizing current and future efforts to protect the state's land and water.
If you live in New York, please write to your state assembly member and senator and ask them to fully fund the EPF. For more information, go to the "We Love New York" website.
