Campaigning for state funding to save land and water
As the New York Times and others reported recently, the recession is providing unparalleled opportunities to purchase open space and create new parks and trails. At the same time, however, many state and local governments are struggling. Park and conservation funds--even dedicated money set aside for this purpose--are at risk.
The Conservation Campaign remains on the front lines, helping to keep and create new public funding for conservation now, when dollars can go further and so many places have a second chance to preserve open space once slated for development.
In the coming year, we are sponsoring ballot initiatives to extend Oregon's constitutional amendment dedicating a percentage of lottery funds to parks and conservation, as well as working to pass Iowa's first-ever dedicated tax for conservation and outdoor recreation. And as state legislatures begin to convene, we will be working to preserve conservation funding and renew successful programs in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and elsewhere.
You can support these efforts by donating online to the Conservation Campaign; 85 percent of the funds we raise goes to directly to support ballot measure campaigns and legislative lobbying. And, your investment in our work has incredible returns - on average every dollar given to the Conservation Campaign has helped generate more than $2,000 in government investment to protect our land and water resources. |
Vote tomorrow on preserving CT coastal land
A January 26 referendum in Madison, Connecticut, offers a last chance to preserve the beautiful salt marshes and rare coastal forest of the former Griswold Airport and create a new park. For more information, see our website. Photo by Nicholas_T |
