Happy Holidays Dear Friends....

LiveArts imageThis picture shows Devynn Emory executing a difficult, grinning, one-legged horsey move in the farm that appears at the end of More, the dance we premiered at the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival in September. More also has a living room, an orchard and a junk pile with a lifeless body. Everything goes away in this dance and yet some indomitable spirit remains, grinning and hopping on one leg if need be.

Though it's been a very tough year we feel grateful to be able to still kick and yell and follow our hearts. This fall we've been working hard, immersing ourselves in research and questions with amazing performers, designers, students, and audiences.

Here's another picture from More:

We're so proud of this dance. The set is scattered around our office 'cause we don't have anywhere else to put it and we still feel like we're living inside of its world in some ways.

Here's what some people said about it:

"an exhilirating leap" - Lisa Kraus, Writing My Dancing Life blog
"The use of stillness and silence was stunning." - Ishmael Houston-Jones, movement research blog
"hipsters with bad hairdos" - Jim Rutter, Broad Street Review
"We are left in the world of the extraordinary and of pure, delicious movement." - Jonathan Stein, Broad Street Review

We would love to hear your thoughts. We poured ourselves into More and in the wake of our work with Tere O'Connor, it's been ushering us into a new era of dance-making and collaboration. If you saw the premiere tell us about your experience. Send us an email. And some of you have wanted to know more about Tere O'Connor, the choreographer who we invited into our lives to shake things up. This article discusses the premiere of his latest work and suggests his current role as a leader in the world of contemporary dance. We thought it would be nice to share a little context for why we love him so!

Research, Research, Research......
The Improv Lab has begun. This fall we invited luminous choreographer Miguel Gutierrez and brilliant director Dan Rothenberg to explore all our assumptions about improvisation. That old thing? Yes that old thing! We've used improvisation for so long, as both a creation tool and sometimes a performance form. But what really happens when we improvise? What is it actually good at doing? Our Improv Lab team gathered to share, research, and argue about this old dead horse that we all take for granted. We engaged in an amazing research laboratory that included 10 performers in a cosmic mash-up of Pig Iron Theatre and Headlong. This research is just the beginning, stay tuned for more. WATCH Dito van Reigersberg and Miguel wrestling in an improvisational performance experiment from the lab.

Artists in Headlong Performance Institute

This year's HPI class rocked our world. Curbside Ruckus, a completely student-run final performance was a huge success. The HPI Faculty (which includes Quinn Bauriedel, Aaron Cromie, Emmanuelle Delpech-Ramey and Mark Lord, in addition to the 3 Headlong Co-Directors)had an amazing time with this extremely special group of 14 artists. They were--without exception--smart, soulful, and courageous. We are sad to see them go but can't wait to see what they'll be making in the big, wide world. Keep your eyes peeled for these names as they invent the future of performance: Lindsay Anderson, Sarah Ashkin, Katherine Cooper, Cassidy Dermott, Marc Williams Foster, Brie Hines, Jenna Horton, Lily Hughes-Dunn, Emily Letts, Rose Luardo, Amy Scheer, Lynnia Shanley, Samantha Tower, and Kelly Turner.

Please consider making a donation.
These are tough times to be a dance company. Our most reliable funder just announced they would no longer fund dance companies. Darn it. That's $10,000 every year that we will no longer get.
