Volunteer Story:
Organized Labor Gets Head Start on Day of Caring
Organized Labor got a head start on United Way's Day of Caring by recently completing a project for the YMCA's Hodell Acres. Members of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Apprenticeship program tackled the YMCA playground by laying more than 120 yards of mulch. The team was joined by Vickie Meyers of United Way and Ron Dierkes, who helped start the local Day of Caring effort 19 years ago. Above, children at Hodell say "thanks" for the Day of Caring effort! 1 in 5 Local Children Living in Poverty | |
A recent review of demographic and socio-economic data reveals that in 2009 one in five Allen County children was living in poverty. This is the first time that local childhood poverty rates have been the same as national rates; historically, childhood poverty in Allen County has been well below national levels.
The review and analysis of recent Census and American Community Survey data was completed by The Community Research Institute at IPFW.
"This analysis is critical to helping United Way with our review of community conditions," said Todd Stephenson, president and CEO of United Way of Allen County. "Our investment teams will use this data to help determine our area's top needs and then look at ways to address those needs."
