Live United Campaign Kicks Off!
Campaign Kick Off

United Way of Allen County volunteers and staff proudly wore Live United shirts and recently gathered at the Courthouse Green to announce this year's campaign goal. The United Way Board of Directors has set the 2009-10 workplace campaign goal at $4.8 million. During the 2008-09 workplace campaign, United Way raised $4.7 million.
"A donation to United Way does more than fund vital programming," says 2009 Campaign Chair Ron Turpin of Lincoln Financial Group. "United Way is the central agency that provides an overarching view of social services in our community; we help track community needs and issues, and we bring the partners and dollars together to address those issues."
Anyone wanting to contribute to United Way's Community Campaign can give online at
www.unitedwayallencounty.org or call 260.422.4776 and ask for the staff accountant. Approximately 500 area businesses run workplace campaigns with about 15,000 individuals making a donation every year. Workplace campaigns run September 2009 through early 2010.

Dick Doermer Honored with
Bill Latz Award
Longtime Fort Wayne philanthropist Richard Doermer was honored with the United Way Bill Latz Award for Leadership on September 8, 2009. The award was presented during United Way's annual Tocqueville reception at the home of Dick and Marni Waterfield.
Richard (Dick) Doermer and his late wife Weezie began volunteering for United Way in the mid-1950's, and he and his family foundation have made an annual gift to United Way of Allen County for nearly 40 years. He served in a number of roles for United Way, including Board Chair (1975 and 1976), Campaign Chair (1973) and Board Member Emeritus.
"Mr. Doermer has spent countless hours working to help local residents who struggle - with finances, family troubles, disabilities, education and other issues. His support for United Way has always been about what he could do to help others and in turn help our community be a better place," said Jerry Peterson, president and CEO of United Way of Allen County.

Need Information about H1N1?
Call 2-1-1.
United Way and 2-1-1 are stepping up to the plate to inform local residents about the H1N1 virus. The 2-1-1 Call Center is partnering with the Allen County Board of Health and phone counselors are fielding questions about the virus.
2-1-1 is a free, confidential, 24-hour information and referral center. It provides callers with information about how and where to find assistance for services such as housing, shelter, food, legal aid, clothing, education, counseling and more. In 2008, Northeast Indiana's 2-1-1 Center took 36,595 calls - a 22.3 percent increase over 2007.

Congratulations Jerry!
The Chapel Ridge Lions Club recently presented its "2009 Visionary Leadership Award" to United Way of Allen County's President and CEO, Jerry Peterson. The award recognizes community leaders who have had a positive impact on the community, and who have demonstrated a high commitment to The Lions Club motto "we serve."
