Donations to Help for Hard Times Fund Now Matched
Thanks to a $100,000 grant from the American Electric Power Foundation provided through Indiana Michigan Power and a $50,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne, donations to United Way's Help for Hard Times fund are now being matched three to one.
United Way started the Help for Hard Times campaign because Allen County's unemployment rate stands at 11 percent, up from 5.4 percent just a year ago. Agencies providing basic services are turning away hundreds of people each week because of a lack of dollars. One hundred percent of all dollars raised will pay for direct services to local residents who are struggling. Services will include food, rent and mortgage assistance, medical and dental assistance and other critical services.
Services will be provided by Catholic Charities, Lutheran Social Services, Matthew 25, Neighborhood Health Clinics, the Salvation Army and several food pantries, including those supported by Associated Churches Food Bank and Community Harvest Food Bank. Please click on the Help for Hard Times movie link above to give $5 (or more) and tell 5 friends. | |

Congratulations Wells Fargo! |

Wells Fargo received the awards for its commitment to community improvement and volunteerism. Locally, Wells Fargo is a tremendous supporter of United Way of Allen County. In addition, Community Banking President Andy Veenstra serves on United Way's board and campaign cabinet and has long been an advocate for the local agency. |
United Way Partners with Public Radio
|
| On July 31, Northeast Indiana Public Radio (NIPR) will hold a one-day fund drive to support their unique local programming. As part of the effort, NIPR will make a contribution equal to ten percent of funds raised to United Way's Learn United initiative.
Learn United's goal is to close the third grade reading achievement gap within ten years. Currently, more than 1,000 local third-graders don't pass the language portion of the ISTEP test each year. Most of these children never catch up and have trouble graduating and holding down good jobs. United Way and its many partners aim to reduce these numbers by matching local volunteers with schoolchildren who struggle with reading. You can volunteer at www.LearnUnited.org.
Don't forget to listen to NIPR's WBOI, 89.1 on July 31 and join the effort to help all children read at grade level. |
| Campaign Coordinator Training |

Contact Keli Everett at 260.422.4776 or kelie@uwacin.org to sign up.
