Focus On: Closing the Achievement Gap
 girl and books

In the fall of 2007, Women's Initiative members decided to focus their energy on closing the reading achievement gap, or the academic disparity among racial/ethnic and socio-economic groups. Now that the direction is set, Women's Initiative members, United Way's Diversity Cabinet, United Way volunteers and staff are working together to develop a specific road map to close the achievement gap for low-income children in Allen County. Learn more.
Volunteers Needed to Read to Children
Stack of Books     Women's Initiative members raised nearly $2,000 for books at two local elementary schools with high populations of low-income children. Women's Initiative members and volunteers gathered in late November to kick off the book drive and will deliver the books to Fairfield Elementary on January 29 and to Southwick Elementary on February 1. At both locations, Women's Initiative volunteers will also read to children from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 2:30 p.m. If you'd like to help deliver the books and read to some of the schoolchildren, please e-mail Robin Holley at robinh@uwacin.org.
Meet Co-Chair Chris Rupp
Chris Rupp                             Chris Rupp, co-chair of the Women's Initiative, has been working to start a local initiative for several years. Learn how Chris got involved and what her goals are for the Women's Initiative, as well as how she's coping with her newly acquired "empty nest syndrome." Read more.
Membership Drive for Founding Members
United Way of Allen County now has more than 60 Women's Initiative members; the deadline to join and still be listed as a Founding Member is set for the end of January 2008. Anyone joining after that date will be listed as a Sustaining Member. Please contact Robin Holley at robinh@uwacin.org for more information about joining the Women's Initiative.
