As many of us experience in North America, the winter can be filled with cold, dark, dismal days. We can fall into the trap of sleeping more and hibernating in our homes. This can lead to boredom and even depression. To boost your energy and keep your spirits high, here are a few fun and practical ideas to get through our cold winter days.
Start off your day with some exercise. Simple activities include doing simple stretches, yoga, push-up, sit-ups, etc. There are many creative possibilities. The main thing is to do some movement in the morning to energize yourself for the day ahead.
Write out your ideal day on paper. Take a few minutes to plan out your day by writing out how you want it to go. Write down the most important things you want to get done in the day, and write them as you would like them to turn out. This will get you to focus upon what you want. In turn, you will get excited to accomplish these tasks and experiences throughout the day.
Read some great literature. We are constantly bombarded with an endless stream of emails, Facebook updates, and Twitter feeds. Instead, pick some inspiring literature. Much of our news and media is built upon negative stories. Many people buy into this creating fear and anxiety. Instead, intentionally seek out reading material that will make you feel good.
Make a point of connecting with someone in person. Make a point of meeting someone that you haven't seen in the past year, creating a sense of excitement and anticipation. Meeting face to face will do two things for you; it gets you out of the house, and allows for an authentic connection with someone you care about.

- I can't control my circumstances, but I can control my response to them - it may be raining/snowing out there, but I can choose whether it is raining in my mind/heart.
- There are as many Monday mornings in our week as Friday evenings, so what is the point of sticking pins in ourselves just because it is Monday morning? If we can't change our circumstances, let's learn to change our attitude to them.
- Let's learn once again that old fashioned wisdom of just counting our Blessings - we have so, so much to be grateful for- we have more than most people in the world!
- Old Indian proverb: "I cried because I had no shoes, until I met a man who had no feet".
About Miles:
A blind adventurer, Miles Hilton-Barber's achievements are astounding. Miles has completed the world's toughest marathons, climbed the world's highest mountains, piloted aircraft, deep-sea diving, hot-air ballooning, and more. He is currently Director of Motivational Development at the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) in the U.K.

Yes, the "winter blues" are real!
I grew up in Seattle, Washington (damp Capital of the world) where I often heard California transplants gripe about the debilitating effects of "light depravation." My friends and I laughed it off as one of those goofy "California things."
Well, I'm not laughing now. This authentic seasonal funk can affect your physical well-being, your productivity at work, and your ability to be nice to your friends (and clients!). So, if the lack of light - and the preponderance of dark transforms you into an unproductive Winter Gloom Child, here are some things you can do about it.
See a doctor. A doc visit may confirm you should take meds or visit a therapist. If so, take the medications as prescribed...and don't blow off your therapy appointments. This is serious. You want to feel better, don't you?
Eat well & exercise. Cliché, I know, but eating good food and exercising is as important as getting enough sleep. Plus, these healthy habits will keep you too busy to self-medicate with alcohol or illegal drugs.
See friends. When you're slumping-in-the-dark-days, it can be hard to feel social. But make the effort. Friends can get you out of your house for a laugh. They can also be a welcome shoulder to cry on. Hey, they might be depressed for SAD and need you, too!
Get out of town. If you can swing it, plan a short getaway to a sunny place. It doesn't have to be anywhere expensive or exotic...just sunnier than where you are right now. If you truly have winter seasonal affective disorder, you just might meet other members of the SAD community and you can all laugh about it. Make it an annual ritual; something to look forward to.
