How Do I Improve Communication with Aging Relatives/Clients?
Acknowledging the Magnitude of Loss. Acknowledging in every conversation that we understand how powerful the control driver is will improve communication immeasurably.
Ultimatums never work. With this (and most other) age groups, ultimatums usually backfire. Don't use them.
Stand by your elders! Elderly people need reassurance we won't abandon them or question their decision once they make it-even if we don't agree on the issue.
Give the elderly room to change their minds. Let our elders know that whatever decision they make we'll support, but leave the door open for revised decision-making.
Watch your tone. Elderly people are sensitive to an authoritarian tone that can creep into our conversations with them.
Be patient with the details. Our elders can focus on unimportant details, with much fretting and indecision that many people find irritating. They can also arrive at conclusions to situations or decisions about unimportant matters that surprise us.
