How Do I Improve Communication with Aging Relatives/Clients?

Acknowledging the Magnitude of Loss. Acknowledging in every conversation that we understand how powerful the control driver is will improve communication immeasurably.

Ultimatums never work. With this (and most other) age groups, ultimatums usually backfire. Don't use them.

Stand by your elders! Elderly people need reassurance we won't abandon them or question their decision once they make it-even if we don't agree on the issue.

Give the elderly room to change their minds. Let our elders know that whatever decision they make we'll support, but leave the door open for revised decision-making.

Watch your tone. Elderly people are sensitive to an authoritarian tone that can creep into our conversations with them.

Be patient with the details. Our elders can focus on unimportant details, with much fretting and indecision that many people find irritating. They can also arrive at conclusions to situations or decisions about unimportant matters that surprise us.

How Do I Become More Innovative?

This stimulating question reminds me of a slightly different one, "how much do I love thee?" and the rejoinder being, "let me count the ways." The ways of becoming more innovative are unlimited, and really quite simple to activate.

One suggestion is to think about how you're thinking right now. What mode - Innovator, Dreamer (hatching ideas but not serious about taking action), Sustainer (status quo-oriented) or Defeatist?

Whenever I speak to groups, I find people get excited about a simple technique called "Obligation or Opportunity?" All you need to do is write these words on a Post-it Note and put that note on your computer monitor, or on the dashboard of your car.

As you

think about the task at hand, coax yourself to shift modes and think about the opportunity that might be born if only you are open to seeing it and seizing it! It's important to realize that innovation is not what you do after you get your work done, it's how you approach your work day to day, minute to minute.

So: if you happen to be feeling a bit ho hum right now, or overwhelmed with all the

piles of work, take a step back. Invite yourself to think of 10 things in your life that you feel really good about, that are working right now. And after you've gotten to #10, stop and notice how your thinking has changed just by drumming up that list! That's how you become more innovative, starting right now!

How Do I Encourage My Spouse to Get Fit?

As an athlete I believe in a healthy lifestyle. I feel it is important to eat well and stay fit. With busy schedules it is not always easy to eat right so that is why I stay on top of the latest trends in nutrition and I share this news with my wife and friends. I encourage those reading this to go after your own level of personal excellence. One of my favorite quotes is, "allow yourself to be great". So get out there and make it a great day.

Tips on encouraging your spouse to get fit:

1) Participate in the sports that she/he loves - for a sound body

2) Making sure she/he has a better understanding of proper nutrition so she/he eats better.

3) Taking time to herself/himself so she/he can clear her/his mind and be more refreshed - for a sound mind
