Joann's Designer Twist on College Living

Amanda's desk
Who says college kids have to live with cargo furniture and what's leftover from your basement?  Joann's daughter Amanda leaves for college in August and will be living off campus in an apartment with a girlfriend.  This obviously means starting from scratch as the apartment will be empty.  No problem for Joann who recently scoured the local antique shops turning trash into treasures and revitalizing pieces by using them in creative ways.

This photo is actually a vanity (purchased for $90!) that her daughter will use as a desk.  It's pretty darn cute as it is, but Joann will be power painting it black (with a sprayer for a professional look). The top is scratched but who cares?  It will look great covered in photos of friends and family with a piece of glass on top!  Another antique shop had a shabby chic double headboard AND footboard for $125 and the local Marshall's had a great black victorian chair with funky purple upholstery!  It can slide right up to that cool new desk.....
