Improvements Continue on Schedule
at Quonset's Port of Davisville

Major improvements planned for the Port of Davisville in the Quonset Business Park are on schedule and moving towards a heavy construction phase as warm weather approaches. Made possible by a $22.3 million federal TIGER grant awarded to Quonset last year, thanks to the efforts of Sen. Jack Reed and the Rhode Island congressional delegation, the project will add significant new port capacity. Here is the status of the major projects:
  • The centerpiece of the TIGER work, improvements to Pier 2 (North) and the addition of a port crane, has received approval from the Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC). Construction plans have been finalized and bids are due in late April.
  • Structural repairs to Pier 1 (South) have also received CRMC approval. Bidding for the construction phase will take place through the month of April.
  • Improvements to Terminals 4 & 5, land-side parcels south of the piers, are under review by CRMC, with the planning phase possibly beginning as early as April.
  • Improvements to Davisville Road and the extension of Tidal Drive have received CRMC approval and are only days from design phase completion.
  • Railroad track, ballast and ties have been installed in the Pier 2 area from Davisville Rd. to the NORAD switch.

Quonset Partners with R.I.
Convention Center to Host Major
International Conference

Good things happen when Rhode Island collaborates. Proof of that concept will be on full display from May 14-19 when 3,000 people come to the Rhode Island Convention Center and to Quonset for the 2011 IEEE 12th International Conference on Transmission and Distribution Construction, Operation and Live- Line Maintenance (ESMO). ESMO is the premier event in the electric utility industry for hands-on demonstration and discussion of live-line activity.

In addition to a first-class convention center facility, conference organizers needed a sizeable tract of outdoor space with the proper electrical and safety requirements. That's where Quonset came in, along with National Grid, which will serve as the host utility. Quonset is proud to team up with its Rhode Island partners to attract this major conference and the economic impact it will bring to our state.

Back in 2005 when the Rhode Island EDC spun off the Quonset Development Corporation into its own quasi-public agency, there were thousands of details to manage. Looking back, it's pretty amazing how smoothly it all went. But one detail that did get missed was registering the right web address. Luckily, QDC has great partners.

While QDC used an address (qdcri.com) that was the product of its government roots, Karla Driscoll was thinking like the savvy marketer that has made her such a success as executive director of the North Kingstown Chamber of Commerce. She secured the more people- and search-engine-optimization-friendly URL Quonset.com. Then she donated it to the Quonset Development Corporation, reflecting the spirit of partnership between the NK Chamber and the QDC. Now, the changeover is complete.

So next time you find us at Quonset.com or, better yet, send the link to a business interested in locating here, think of Karla Driscoll and our partnership. We do!
