May 2010
Greetings!
desh photo
Only in Wisconsin can spring and summer seem to arrive in a heartbeat! Last week we had 40-some degrees and rain, while in the last few days, we're nearing 70 degrees, the leaves are on the trees, flowers are blooming, and the traffic heading north on State Highway 42 is swelling from a trickle to a flood. It's hard to believe; Memorial Day is just around the corner.

As Door County residents and visitors know, summer is an extraordinarily busy season on the peninsula. There's a lot happening - and that's true for us here at the Door County Maritime Museum as well. We have a lot to share with you in this issue of our e-newsletter!

To start, we will be opening the doors to our new, exciting "Ghosts!" exhibit this weekend! Members are invited to a special sneak-preview on Friday night, and we welcome the public on Saturday. We're also happy to announce that the Tug John Purves is now offering its summer schedule; tours are available seven days a week.

If you haven't made reservations yet for this year's Lighthouse Festival, check out this month's festival article and visit our Web site for more information on specific tours. The tours are selling out quickly - in fact, we just added two Chambers Island tours to accommodate enthusiasts who are eager to experience this unique Green Bay destination.

We also have additional information about our June 25 Ports of Call Gala, and raffle tickets are still on sale for two exceptional prizes. With so much happening at the Museum and around the county this season, we hope to see you soon!

Wishing you fair winds and following seas,

Bob Desh
Executive Director

"Ghosts!" to be Unveiled This Weekend!
Members-Only Preview at 7 p.m. Friday

It's time! The Door County Maritime Museum's eagerly anticipated exhibit "Ghosts! Haunted Lighthouses of the Great Lakes" is set to open this weekend. The Museum will welcome members on Friday, May 21 and open the doors to the general public on Saturday, May 22.

The members-only exhibition preview is scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday. Light refreshments will be served, and members may bring nonmember guests for $10 per person. The Museum kindly requests that members RSVP by calling (920) 743-5958 or sending an e-mail to jlarson@dcmm.org.

"Ghosts!" takes guests on a compelling journey through the colorful histories and legends of nine haunted Great Lakes Lighthouses: Eagle Harbor on Lake Superior; Fairport Harbor on Lake Erie; Tawas Point and Old Presque Isle on Lake Huron; Gibraltar Point on Lake Ontario; Seul Choix on Lake Michigan; and, also on Lake Michigan, Door County's own Sherwood Point, Chambers Island and Pottawatomie lights. A map identifies these and additional haunted lighthouse locations throughout the Great Lakes.

The exhibition also explores ghosts and hauntings, the reality of alternate dimensions, human perception, psychic abilities, the different types of investigators and skeptical-inquiry perspectives.

In addition, guests may watch a presentation about Great Lakes ghost ships in the Elbapilothouse. The film/still compilation and narrative will present paranormal activity surrounding ships as apparitions, onboard hauntings and derelicts. The accounts feature Bannockburn; Roger Blough; Chicora; Eastland; Emperor; Edmund Fitzgerald; Griffon; and Prins Willem V.

The Museum also is featuring a film with outtakes from Don Hermansen's "Haunted Lighthouse" series, incorporating Fred Stonehouse as narrator, interviews with credible witnesses and inside-and-out footage of haunted Great Lakes lighthouses. The film is being shown in the DCMM's intimate Horton Gallery Theater.

"Ghosts!" provides an immersive experience courtesy of special visual and auditory effects within a mock lighthouse environment and throughout the exhibit itself. Children will delight in this; they also will enjoy the dress-up area, plasma ball, shifting scents as "haunts" come and go. Other kid-friendly activities include lighthouse word scrambles and a large puzzle.

After so many months of planning and construction, we're excited to unveil this latest world-class exhibition in our Sturgeon Bay galleries. We look forward to seeing you there!

John Purves Tug Now Open for Tours Seven Days a Week

John Purves illustrationThe Door County Maritime Museum has resumed tours of its popular in-water exhibit, the Tug John Purves, with a daily slate of 40-minute docent-led tours in May.

The immaculately restored 149-foot vessel was rededicated in late July 2008 after a remarkable five-year restoration project. Built in 1919 and christened the Butterfield, the tug's colorful past included World War II duty in the Aleutian Islands. She made her way to Sturgeon Bay in 1956 when she was purchased by Roen Steamship Company.

Today, the tug carries the Roen colors and has been outfitted to appear much as she did while operated by Roen in the 1950s and '60s. Capt. John Roen, company owner, renamed the tug in honor of general manager and longtime employee, John Purves.

Moored on the waterfront behind the Maritime Museum, the tug is now open daily. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with tours leaving on the half hour. Tours will be expanded beginning Memorial Day weekend, with a 9:30 a.m. start.

Tours are priced at $5 per person and include the opportunity to visit nearly every space on the vessel, from engine room to wheelhouse.

The Museum is located at 120 N. Madison Ave. between the two downtown bridges on Sturgeon Bay's West Side. For more information call 920-743-5958 or visit www.dcmm.org.

Lighthouse Festival Now Includes Extra Chambers Island Cruises!

Due to high demand for Lighthouse Festival trips to Chambers Island, the Door County Maritime Museum has added a couple of two-hour island cruises for Friday afternoon, June 11. While these new cruises will not include an on-island component, they will provide guests with water views of the Chambers Island lighthouse and the far side of the island.

The 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. cruises are offered in cooperation with Salmon Depot Charters and can accommodate 13 guests. Priced at $40, each ticket includes an admission voucher for the Door County Maritime Museum's Sturgeon Bay facility and a free Lighthouses of Door County pocket guidebook (one per order, limited to first 500 orders).

Ticket sales for the 2010 Door County Lighthouse Festival on June 11-13 are booming, and the Museum staff is encouraging enthusiasts to secure their reservations to the 17th annual event, previously known as the Lighthouse Walk.

"Many of our tours have already sold out, so book your tickets soon!" said Bob Desh, DCMM's executive director.  "Plus, as a special bonus for reserving early, the first 500 orders will receive a copy of Lucy Hanley's pocket guide book, Lighthouses of Door County, to enrich their chosen tour packages."

For more information, to request a brochure and to order tickets, visit www.dcmm.org/lhw.html. You may also order tickets by calling 920-743-5958.

Gills Rock Clean-up Day on May 25!

Please help us get our wonderful little maritime museum in Gills Rock ship-shape for the 2010 season.

The planned work list includes general cleaning of the museum and light yard work to get the exterior spruced up and ready to greet visitors.

In addition to your work attire, please bring lawn maintenance equipment, such as rakes, clippers and weed-eaters; household cleaning and dusting tools; and your enthusiasm, so we can make our museum the best it can be.

We will muster at the maritime museum in Gills Rock at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, May 25. If you can assist, please contact the museum at (920) 743-5958 or drop our volunteer coordinator, Jon Gast, an e-mail at jgast@dcmm.org.

Many hands make for light work. Let's have a good turnout and some fun! Thanks in advance for your assistance - we couldn't do it without you.

Get on Board for Mystic Seaport and More DCMM is Now Taking Reservations for Fall Tour

Mystic Seaport SquareThe Door County Maritime Museum is still accepting reservations for a one-of-a-kind, eight-day tour of significant East Coast historical maritime locations, including the renowned Mystic Seaport Museum.

The motor-coach tour will leave Sturgeon Bay on Thursday, October 14, and travel to Cleveland, Ohio, for a tour of the Steamship William G. Mather Museum. The William G. Mather is a retired Great Lakes bulk carrier that spent 55 years on the lakes.

The tour will arrive on the East Coast on Saturday, October 16, and will first visit the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and its museum in New London, Connecticut. That's followed by a full day at Mystic Seaport, considered the nation's finest maritime museum. Succeeding days include a trip to Boston for a journey along the historic Freedom Trail and to the U.S.S. Constitution ("Old Ironsides"); and to New York City for a day filled with stops at the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the World Trade Center site as well as the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, which is centered on the famous aircraft carrier.

Bob Desh, DCMM's executive director, will offer insight throughout the tour. After 36 years of service in the U.S. Coast Guard, Desh retired with the rank of captain. He is a maritime history buff who can provide unique perspectives on a tour that revisits a number of sites from his Coast Guard career.

The tour will return to Sturgeon Bay on October 21 and includes all transportation, lodging, admission fees, luggage handling, a tour director and 12 meals (seven breakfasts and five dinners).
