Aspiring boat builders have an opportunity to gain first-hand skills in the age-old craft when the Door County Maritime Museum's annual boat building class gets underway Jan. 23. Only two openings remain for the class, which retains a limited enrollment to enhance the learning experience. Classes are conducted on Saturdays through June.

The 2010 boat is a 14-foot Cosine wherry rowboat. It's a John Harstock design featuring cedar strip construction with elegant lines. The wherry may be viewed on Ray Klebba's White Salmon BoatWorks Web site at www.raysdreamboats.com. Tradition holds that the finished boat will be raffled off as the grand prize to benefit the Maritime Museum at the Door County Classic and Wooden Boat Festival held the first weekend in August.
