| "Roe-ing to Estonia"...The Winter Speaker Series Continues
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Roe-ing to Estonia"...The Door County Maritime Museum continues its Winter Speakers Series on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. in the Museum in Sturgeon Bay when Dan Schwarz, owner of Dan's Fish in Door County, will present a program discussing his growing international business. Dan's Fish, Inc. is a family operated business that specializes in fresh water fish. Operating out of facilities located near Institute, the company processes, distributes, exports and imports seafood from all over the world. It also manufactures value-added products such as breaded seafood and cheese and manufactures specialty products such as the Great Lakes whitefish as well as various fish roes. Representative of Schwarz's international reach is Seafood International, sister company to Dan's Fish. It is located in the Republic of Estonia. Seafood International offers local representation for Dan's Fish, Inc. in the European and Russian markets. Of particular interest, Dan's Fish sources the fine caviar from various fish species such as whitefish, herring and chubs - all from the Great Lakes. It also sources salmon roe from the wild Alaskan salmon producers and manufactures local "löjrom" in Russia. The Speakers Series is sponsored by the Friends of the Door County Maritime Museum, an organization dedicated to assisting the Museum both through fundraising projects and volunteer service. Admission to the program is free. Refreshments will be provided by the Friends groups. Donations will be appreciated. The final program in the series will be Tuesday, Feb. 24, when historian Richard Smith will be at the museum on Sturgeon Bay to talk about shipwrecks. |
The Door County Maritime Museum proudly presents a workshop in "Artifact Conservation, Curation, & Interpretation" beginning Saturday, February 21, 2009. This 7-week, 21-28 hour workshop is designed to give interested adults and students a hands on experience with artifacts and the procedures, techniques, and processes a museum uses to professionally curate an artifact in its collection.
The course is laid out chronologically to follow an artifact from acquisition to display. Subjects include artifact photography, measuring, researching, conservation, drawing, and museum curation. Each participant will take a museum artifact through the processes from start to finish. Participants interested in continuing their education in the field of history, archaeology, museum work or other related fields are encouraged to apply.
