September 2007
Dear ,
Door County Maritime Museum Brian Kelsey
The wind is blowing hard today thus signaling the beginning of the end of summer and the entrance of my favorite season, autumn.  It is also helping me to get into the mindset that our pirates exhibit will be coming down in January eventually making way for an exciting new exhibit entitled "Freshwater Fury!"

As I mentioned in earlier eMari-Times, the success of "Pirates!" has been extraordinary and brought a whole new group into the Museum.  We are all excited to carry on the momentum that this exhibit created and bring forth an equally exceptional exhibit come May 2008.  Stay tuned for more information as details unfold on "Freshwater Fury!"

Thank you for your continued support of the Museum's three locations!

Lawton TenderLawton Tender & Nissan Motor For Sale!

The Museum is fortunate to be the beneficiary of two exciting items that will benefit the Museum's annual operating fund. These items are offered to you through a silent bid process:

·          Lawton Tender (rowing dinghy) - Minimum Bid $3,900

This tender was the grand prize in this year's boat show raffle. She is constructed of cedar strips with mahogany accents and has pretty curves; her dimensions are: 10' overall; beam 44"; and weight 60#. Lawton was "renowned for his fine tenders and superlative craftsmanship which had to row and tow well, be moderately good seaboats, carry heavy loads, and yet shine like a piece of furniture." The value may be determined by the cost of the Lawton Tender kit (by Newfound Woodworks) at $1,900 and the labor (approx. 400 hours) minimally worth at least the same amount of the kit ($1,900 x 2). A ten foot wooden lapstrake (which is less labor than the cedar strip construction) rowing dinghy sells for $5,000.

·          2004 Nissan Motor 3.5 HP 20" shaft Model B2- Minimum Bid $375; valued at $495

NOTE:

All items are in "as is" condition. The boat is available for viewing; please call Trudy Herbst at (920) 743-5958 to schedule an appointment and/or to receive a bid form. Then, just complete the bid form and submit it with your check or credit card information to Bidding Dept., DCMM & LPS, 120 N. Madison, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235; fax to (920) 743-9483; email therbst@dcmm.org. We suggest you confirm receipt of faxed or emailed bids.

The bidding deadline is noon CST Wednesday, 11-28-07. Credit cards and checks will be processed immediately. All bidders will be notified of the outcome. Items must be picked up by December 7, 2007 from the Museum or make arrangements in advance. The winning bidder is responsible for delivery cost.

Gently Used Maritime Books"Gently Used" Maritime Book Sale!

Thank you very much to the eight Museum friends who donated books for the sale. These books were more "like new" than gently used and many were collectible. Although half of the books sold, about 200 books remain that are mainly non-fiction, covering topics such as Lord Nelson, naval ships, boat safety, and boat building. If you are interested in checking out the books available for purchase, please make an appointment with Trudy at the Museum (743-5958) to view the books and make purchases.
