The Search for Help: A Success StorystoryC

By: Cathy Perrin

Cathy

I received a call from a man who was running out of his colostomy supplies. I never considered what kind of stress that might cause for someone who cannot afford expensive supplies.

While I was speaking with him, I was positive that no agency we have in our database either had a) funding for his request, or b) resources for him. I gave him a couple of phone numbers to pursue 'just in case.' I wanted to do a little more research so I asked if I could follow up with him the next day.

During my search, I chased some unproductive leads. I found an organization where unused supplies could be donated to third world countries and several websites for discounted or free supplies through Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance. Finally, one website caught my attention. Upon opening it, I discovered exactly what I was in search for - a company who offered 3 months of free supplies every 12 months to ostomy patients.

I called the client back to give him the number and hoped it was as promising as it appeared to be. No more than thirty minutes later, he called me back to say, "THANK YOU!" The company already had five boxes of supplies on its way to him, which he said would last a lot longer than three months. The following day I received a call from another client who needed ileostomy supplies and referred them to the same company.

Every now and then not only do you learn something, but you also get to improve the quality of a client's life.
