| Young Leader Spotlight |
Kelly Nicholson
Kelly Nicholson has always had a heart for helping
others. "It's a desire I attribute to my faith in God and multiple examples set
by my family," Kelly said. "That's one of the reasons I find United Way and Young
Leaders United to be such a wonderful organization," Kelly said. "It has
uniquely purposed itself in finding and fulfilling the needs of the
community." Kelly, 30, is the immigration/litigation paralegal
for Ziemer, Stayman, Weitzel &
Shoulders, LLP. Originally from Campbellsburg,
Ind., she moved to Evansville in 1998 and graduated from the University of Southern Indiana in 2002 with a degree in
political science. She joined Young
Leaders United in 2008 and has
volunteered for several events, including a one-day mentoring program.
"YLU provides the education and opportunities to make leadership
and service easy; it is a very rewarding organization," Kelly said. "I
highly recommend it to any and all young professionals in search of a way to
give back to our community."

Albion Fellows Bacon Center
The
mission of Albion Fellows Bacon Center is to eliminate domestic and sexual
violence in our communities through advocacy, education, support services and
collaborative partnerships.
One of United Way's long-term community goals is to help increase financial stability for working families in Southwestern Indiana. Albion Fellows Bacon Center is helping our community work toward that goal by providing families and women in crisis access to resources they need to overcome financial obstacles to escape domestic violence and not return.
Financial instability is one of the leading barriers for someone escaping domestic violence and the reason that survivors most often give for why they stay or have returned to their abuser. Survivors often return to abusive relationships because they can't support themselves and their children. They face an impossible choice of returning to violence or going without food, transportation, a place to live, childcare, health care, or access to credit.
Domestic
violence has become the leading cause of major injury among women in the United
States. Every 9 seconds a woman is battered, and every hour 23 women are raped.
Fifty percent of all homeless women and children in this country are fleeing
domestic violence. It is
essential that community groups, law enforcement and citizens work together to
stop the violence. Domestic violence isn't just a women's issue-it's a major
health problem which affects all of us.
In
2009, the following individuals took advantage of the programs and services
provided by Albion Fellows Bacon Center: 6,995 nights of
safe shelter were provided to 359 women and 206 children (319 unduplicated). The Outreach
Program assisted 493 adults and 12 children throughout our eleven-county
service area. The Legal
Advocacy Program provided services to 447 residents of Vanderburgh County. Sexual assault
services were rendered to 568 primary & secondary victims of sexual abuse. The Peer Advocacy
Program reached 467 individuals in Vanderburgh County. Calls to our two
24-hour crisis lines totaled 4,365; requests for shelter totaled 821. 13,866 students
received valuable information on dating, domestic and sexual violence. Currently, their programs reach individuals in eleven southern Indiana counties, and their
services include: -Two 24-hour
crisis lines (domestic violence and sexual assault) -Shelter for women
and children for up to 45 days -Individual and
support group counseling -Legal and Peer
Advocacy Programs -Children's
Program -Sexual Assault
and Outreach Programs -Information and
