EDUCATION spotlight

By beginning with children at a young age, we can make the biggest impact with our efforts. Early childhood experiences pave the way for school readiness and success in the classroom!

United Way is getting books into the hands of kids and families.
One of the keys to our work is literacy. Since 2006, United Way has provided more than 20,000 books to families, childcare centers and organizations in our community through the Early Childhood Development Coalition.

Training for Families
We're doing more than simply handing out books - we are also working with a team of literacy experts to offer parent and family training on fun, interactive ways to read with children so they get the most from story time.

By partnering with the Welborn Baptist Foundation, we are able to maximize our literacy efforts through a unique collection of six local children's books. More than 3,000 families have signed up to participate, and received a copy of the first book, Napoleon's Adventure in Amazonia in their welcome bag. This effort combines books with parent activity guides and WNIN television programming to encourage families to make reading and learning part of their life. How I LIVE UNITED
cathy gray in live united shirt by Dr. Cathy Gray
Associate Superintendent, Familiy, School and Community Partnerships Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation

In the early 1990's, United Way received a grant from the Lilly Endowment to form after school programs. Then, in 1994, United Way funds went to Cedar Hall Elementary to form the first full service community school.

These early efforts grew into the School-Community Council. Through these new partnerships, we were able to leverage resources to fill gaps in service to kids and families.

Now the schools, city governmen
t, United Way and many community organizations are partnering on education initiatives and the new Center for Family, School and Community Partnerships is becoming a reality.

Numerous studies have shown that the healthier and happier children are outside of the classroom, the greater the chance that they will succeed in the classroom. This is what living united is all about. By working together we can help so many more children and families in our community.

That's how I LIVE UNITED.

GIVE. ADVOCATE. VOLUNTEER.
LIVE UNITED.

Tell Five Friends

Tell Your Friends
United Way is working to advance the common good by focusing on EDUCATION, INCOME and HEALTH. These are the building blocks for a good life - a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family through retirement, and good health.

We all win when a child succeeds in school, when families are financially stable and when people have good health.

We LIVE UNITED when we reach out a hand to one and influence the condition of all.  When we give, advocate and volunteer, we lift up our neighbors and friends.
