Terra Buena Torrontes
The wines of Terra Buena originate in the high regions of Mendoza, Argentina, at the foot of the Andes. Here, in the gravelly, well drained soils and the alternating cool nights and warm days, our grapes develop a complex, deeply fruited core of flavor that results in wines of clean minerality and intense focus. Torrontes, the national white grape of Argentina, ispicy, aromatic, and exotic. It makes a delicious aperitif and a fine accompaniment to sushi and shellfish. Torrontés originated in Spain and has adapted itself beautifully to the Mendozan terroir.
Laurel Glen Reds 05
A blend of grenach, zinfandel, and syrah. Fresh, bright scents of blackberry, cassis, cherry and violet. It's very pure and graceful, with mineral-driven dark berry and bitter cherry flavors and an elegant, velvety texture. Finishes fresh and long, with an echoing note of cherry. Zinfandel 40% (60 year old vines), Carignane 25% (117 year old vines), syrah and petite sirah 35% (younger vines); matured in French and American oak barrels for nine months.
Laurel Glen Za Zinfandel 06
Made from a 106 year old zinfandel vineyard in the gravelly soils of Lodi, which yields intense wine that has been in new French oak barrels. Black is the operative descriptor: black in color, juicy black fruit nose, and black tar and berry mouth. The flavors are bold and concentrated, yet still bright and racy, with just a whiff of white pepper to add an exotic touch.
Laurel Glen Cabernet Sauvignon Counterpoint 03
The 2003 Counterpoint displays a fine violet rim with a black core that presages its brightness and depth. Its nose is a lovely mélange of violets, dark cherries, and a haunting citrus note almost reminiscent of malbec, which develops after the bottle has been open for a few hours. It's an inviting and pretty wine that shows rounded tannins and bright fruit in the mouth with an underlying density of fruit and a focused purity that recalls its aromas.

| Wednesday Jazz
Barnes Style |
 |
|
Guitarist William Barnes will be presenting a series of jazz duo concerts at Wine'd Down for the Wednesday night wine tastings for the next several months. Barnes is a composer, producer, and performer who combines deep American roots sensibilities with 21st century influences into his own unique blend of modern, soulful pop-art music. He has been working in the Southeastern music scene since the age of 13 and established himself as a powerful soloist, an in-demand working musician by the time he reached high school. While performing as a sideman for many artists, he also gained popularity with his own group, Far South Movement in the early 1990's. In an effort to broaden his musical vocabulary and abilities, he went on to study music technology, composition, and jazz guitar/theory at several music schools including Boston's Berklee College of Music. After spending time on the east coast and absorbing the sounds of some of the region's most innovative artists, Barnes soon returned home with a fresh ear to help spread word of the vibrant music scene in Alabama, and to this end he formed the production and development company SouthWord Entertainment in 2003. The past few years have found William reemerging with a slew of new projects and a reawakened sense of artistic confidence and musical urgency, and he remains an in-demand fixture in regional bands, studios, theaters, and churches. Barnes is currently freelancing full time, teaching, and hanging out with his wife Alison. With an upcoming tour to Ireland and the long-awaited release of his debut record, 2008 promises to be another busy year for the musician, and he's excited to start it off at Wine'd Down. William enjoys playing live Jazz whenever possible and is greatly looking forward to this series of performances at what he calls, "Birmingham's Best Wine Bar."
