Digital Publishing: Industry Forecast

It is an exciting time to be in digital publishing. The industry is in a constant state of redefinition. Digital edition providers are finding new, interactive ways to attract readers to content and drive online revenue. Advertisers are looking at digital media as a more effective advertising medium. Most notably, consumers are migrating to mobile devices at record levels.

Over the past year, the industry has thrived not only on computers, kiosks and CDs, but there has also been drastic growth in mobile phones and e-readers. The next generation of digital publishing technology is happening right now, and it looks to be tablet PCs that will give readers more value as a multipurpose device and allow publishers to offer unique experiences within each of their publications, rather than conforming to the strict rules and interfaces of e-readers.

So with all of the different options currently available (and still being created), which formats will your audience gravitate to? What will their digital experiences be like in 2010? What will you do to attract new audiences while retaining your current readers?

For now, both our efforts and yours should focus on accommodating the transforming digital landscape. In the early stages, it will be important to find out what formats and devices your audiences are using. It's become apparent that today's readers have an appetite for convenience, so we'd like to be your one-stop only point of digital distribution. This isn't something that has to happen overnight though. Our sales representatives are trained to help evaluate and plan your digital implementation.

As the new year unfolds, we’ll help you realize how you can stay true to your print while developing content for digital mediums of all shapes and sizes – computers, kiosks, mobile devices, tablet PCs, e-readers, the works. So stay tuned through our media outlets – blog, Facebook page, Twitter page and email - for all of our up-to-the-minute developments.

Our best wishes for a Happy New Year--one filled with good health, happiness and lots of success in the way of digital content distribution.

Is there anything you'd like to see this newsletter cover this year? We'd like your suggestions and feedback. We’re all ears!

Your Digital Edition on a Network of 350 Million

Now your loyal customers can interact with your digital edition directly within your Facebook fan page! Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter are becoming an increasingly important hub for brand marketers. These tools have enormous potential to put you in contact with thousands of people, so it's time you bring your business to the innovative experiences of social media. These web communities are some of the best sources of traffic for your content.

A September 2009 MarketingProfs survey of business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) marketers focuses on what’s working for social media marketers and reveals that the most effective tactic for consumer-oriented companies is creating a Facebook application. What’s surprising is that less than one-quarter of total respondents were doing this. eMarketer, January 5, 2010

Creating Custom Publications with Print to PDF

For a long time now, users of our digital directory products have been able to rely on our Tear Pages On Demand (TPOD) sales support program to quickly search, "tear pages,” and print to PDF directly from the directory online; however, for publishers of any other type of medium this has been a challenge. Not anymore!

Dirxion has recently developed a Print to PDF tool for everyone. The benefits are that it allows companies to create niche, custom-built publications from larger catalogs for highly targeted audiences. This can help you maximize your publishing endeavors and foster an even deeper connection with your valued customers by communicating the right message to the right ears and eyes – all while supporting your strategic branding goals.

Print to PDF - Click to View Larger

Yet another great application for Print to PDF is when resellers of a distributor or manufacturer's products only resell a portion of the products offered in a master catalog. This allows the reseller to export a subset of random pages and create a unique publication as a PDF that can be shared to their clients for ordering. For example, a manufacturer or supplier of auto parts wants to pull only their products from an online distributor's catalog. This manufacturer can simply print to PDF the pages of the catalog that showcase their products and send it to appropriate audiences.

Strategic, Premium Ad Placement for Your Advertisers

Offer your advertisers premium ad placement ... even if they’ve missed the deadline.

iPick is a new feature that creates a strategic advertising position directly within the table of contents of your digital edition. This feature is great because of it's dynamic nature, allowing ads to be altered at anytime and allowing you to generate even more ad revenue outside of your sales period. iPick is ideal for Yellow Pages publishers that only pub once per year, as they can sell this feature to advertisers that missed their print deadline or want to expand their presence midway through the year.

iPick ads appear front and center within the Top 30 Yellow Pages Categories in the table of contents bar, offering esteemed visibility and creating even more opportunity for advertisers to be found and contacted. iPick ads can support Flash animation, hyperlinks, video and animation, making them not only more noticeable but also more robust.

Click here to see the iPick ad feature in a live digital directory.

With this quick and easy premium placement, we’re confident your advertisers will find your online directory a compelling alternative to all of the other online directory solutions. If you’re interested in driving more revenue through iPick, call your Dirxion Sales Representative or contact (888) 391-0202 / sales@dirxion.com.
