Magazine Web Traffic Continues To Rise

Magazine Publishers: Here’s yet another reason to go digital. According to the Magazine Publishers of America, unique visitors to magazine web sites increased 8.5% in the second quarter compared to the same period last year -- 69.7 million people visited a magazine web site compared to 64.2 million in 2007.   • Virtual catalogs help retailers convert paper-catalog shoppers to online shopping, said Scott Silverman, executive director of Shop.org, the digital division of the National Retail Federation in Washington.
  • About 14% of the population changed addresses last year. Nearly 33 percent of these people didn't even report their new address to the US Postal Service. Publishers, think digital!
  • Consumers who purchase via multiple channels are more valuable than single channel buyers. A Shop.org's study reveals that multichannel shoppers buy 12 percent more frequently and have a 32% greater annual spending rate than consumers that shop in stores only. (Catalog Success, June 2008)
  • In his article, "8 Ways to Increase Web Sales," Joe Keenan, Senior Editor at Catalog Success, offers several tips on how best to convert website traffic into sales, with one of the tips being the implementation of an e-catalog. According to Haggin, "the e-catalog combines the page-flipping catalog experience with the click-and-buy e-commerce experience. It can also be used to incorporate multimedia to enhance the customer’s product consideration experience."

 
 

Attention! Notice about Banner Ads for
Directory Publishers

Don’t forget that you can add banner ads to your publications. Banner ads are a great way for your advertisers to gain more exposure and for you to generate additional revenue from advertisers. Kindly note, we are asking all banners be sent over in GIF format or animated gif format. There are two sizes available: 234 x 60 for the bottom banners and 468 x 60 for the upper right (top) banners.

 
Letter from Sales & Marketing

Embedded video is adding new life to digital pages. Not only does it draw attention to a particular ad or product, but it keeps users engaged and returning for repeat usage of the digital publication. We have seen a number of customers add both advertiser videos and their own promotional videos. If you have existing videos, contact your sales manager to find out how we can add them to your publication. If you don't have a source for video production, our existing relationships with video production companies will help you provide a solution to your advertisers.

As mentioned in our last email, we continue to find ways to help our customers be green while striving to be a green company. One of our most recent efforts was providing all of our employees with an environmentally friendly shopping bag. We gave them an incentive to earn a second bag by taking a picture of the bag in use at their local grocery store. Check out some of our pictures here!

In addition, to date this year, we have contributed a total of $1,221 ($1 per publication) to the National Arbor Day foundation and there’s still four months to go!

Digital Directory Kiosks; A Lifeline to the Hotel industry for Directory Publishers

A recent USA Today article cited that a growing number of hotels chains are eliminating phone books in hotel rooms due to environmental concerns.

While this isn’t great news for directory publishers, this isn’t bad news either. This move by hotels actually opens up a new door for publishers that currently produce their White & Yellow Pages in digital format: digital directory kiosks.

Digital directory kiosks are simply that, a kiosk where users can easily access the local, digital White & Yellow Pages.

Directory kiosks emerge as a natural extension to the digital edition, particularly as more and more printed phone books are being displaced in public locations due to an ever-diminishing payphone industry.

Best Practices for Promoting Your Digital Publication

Directory kiosks offer environmentally-conscious hotels exactly what they want; the ability to keep phone books, while still reducing their carbon footprint and presenting clutter-free rooms. For publishers, directory kiosks provide the means for a continued relationship with hotels and possibly even an additional revenue source from the sale of screen real estate advertising.

In addition to a kiosk, there are numerous other ways to distribute the digital White & Yellow Pages in hotels:

  1. Provide a CD version of the White & Yellow Pages for
    every room.
  2. Provide a CD to guests at check-in.
  3. In-room advertising. Tell guests that they may pick up a CD in the lobby or access the White & Yellow Pages online.
  4. Advertise the online White & Yellow Pages on the back of the room key.
